I just got my lionhead-mix rabbit a few weeks ago, he’s been perfect since I’ve gotten him, no changes in behavior, he’s still sweet and licks all the time and is just as hyper as always but recently he’s started sneezing, I’d say the sneezing is about once or twice ever 20-30 minutes and only in his cage. The only thing I have changed is his bedding (to natural pine bedding, which is more affordable) but if this were the problem I would of course go back to his other bedding. I just want to make sure he isn’t sick. He has no discharge that I’ve noticed but I’m still really worried. I love this little guy. Any advice would be great.

If the sneezing started with the new bedding then yes it is the culprit… Really they are happier with a soft snuggle rug or even newspaper (mine have both but love to shred the newspaper) A tray full of their favourite hay tends to multi task as bed, breakfast and bathroom.

I agree with Roberta. Wood shavings are not good for bunnies. They really don’t need anything other than litter in their litterbox and something soft to lay on like a blanket or, if they are blanket chewers, some shredded paper. If the sneezing continues with the pine taken away, I would recommend a vet check.

When you say “natural pine bedding”, is the bedding pelleted or are they wood shavings? Wood shavings should never be used because they can cause long-term damage due to the phenols that are released and must be processed through the liver. But pine pellets are safe to use.

I would recommend not using a bedding at all, but rather using a bunny safe litter in the litter box only. This will help cement litter habits and it will be cheaper for you and easier to clean to not have the entire cage covered with bedding. Like Roberta said, you can do a soft blanket or something that can be washed, as long as your rabbit is not a chewer.

Has your rabbit been to the vet yet? If not, you do want to take him sometime soon to get a baseline exam and inquire about neutering. I would also mention the sneezing. The vet may choose to do a “just in case” round of antibiotics.
