Hi everyone. I know this question dosn’t nessesarly have to do with bonding but I thought I would ask it here anyways.
So I recently bonded my two bunnies. Jonah, a male holland lop who is about 11 months old and Penelope, my female rabbit who is about 7 months old ( I don’t know her breed). So I was just wondering what happens when one of them dies. I know I don’t really have to be worrying to much about it because they are both still young but I was just curious. Will the rabbit go into a state of depression. I know some of you will say to find it another companion but what if the rabbit that is still alive is old and will die soon and then you would just have to get another bunny for that new bunny too. I thought I would just ask knowing I would have to deal with this sometime myself.

It truly depends on the rabbit how they react. I have 3 seniors who are now singles but were initially one of a bonded pair – they are just fine and oddly enough none of them had the depression you hear about in rabbits – I know it must be true though that they can get very depressed and how you deal with it just depends on what you want to do.

Now keep in mind, my 3 seniors all room together as singles so they keep each other company that way. It is really up to you whether or not you replace one of a pair – I will have to say that if your rabbit is older, then there is a good chance you can find a rabbit who is older in a rescue or shelter that is need of a good home if you decide to adopt another companion for your rabbit and give that rabbit a second chance since older rabbits are far too often overlooked in shelters/rescues.

You do hear about rabbits grieving just as humans do. I’ve never had a fully bonded pair where one passes away. But bunnies are tough and as long as their human gives them lots of love and extra attention, they pull through the grieving process. I can understand your concern, as while I was working on bonding my boys, I wondered the same thing.
