We have 2 bunnies that are outdoor bunnies.  We have built them an outdoor habitat complete with a roof that is solid on one half and lockable, liftable doors on the other.  The run is 8 foot by 8 foot and is attatched to their two story hutch.  Inside are toys, a tunnel, a digging box, bale of hay and food and water.  They get played with every day inside their run, and brought inside and held about every other day.  I read that they should be locked in their hutch at night.  They do not like to be put inside their hutch and it is a hassle and process every night to do so.  They have full access to their hutch when and if they need it.  Is it necessary to hassle and annoy them at night and force them inside?

That is a nice run and a generous size.
I think putting them in protects from predators. What kind of predators would you likely get in your area?

Do you have a wire base on the run? This would prevent them digging out and anything else digging in. Definitely something to modify if you don’t already have a base.

I have to agree, I think putting them in at night will protect them from predators. Is there something that is a favorite to them that could help encourage them to come inside at night. My buns are obsessed with their daily craisins or I use their nightly salads and pellets to get them to get back inside their house.

Hmm, Jerseygirl.. thinking from an indoor perspective (so it may be different on grass) but wouldn’t a wire bottom be possibly harmful to their feet? But I also worry about them being able to dig out/something else dig in.

No it wouldn’t hurt their feet. You dig the entire enclosure out several inches deep, lay the wire down and connect it to the walls, then put the dirt back on top. The wire will be covered, while still providing protection.

Thanks for the responses, yes the run has a wire bottom. Now that we have found the right location for the run I will dig out the dirt and bury the wire. Thanks tanlover14 for the suggestion of craisins. I just went out there and put several in a jar and shook them and said “bedtime” because they happened to both be inside the hutch and then fed them the craisins. They seemed to like them so I will continue to do that and hopefully they will get the idea that bedtime and hutch means treat!

It’s often said Craisins are bunny crack. Good to hear you may have found an easy solution.

It looks like you have a good amount of hay in the run so that certainly helps pad the wire base.

@Tanlover, Hazel answered your question best. The other thing I’ve seen is Runs that are put on lawn so it comes up they the wire and cushions the bunny feet.

They should catch on pretty quickly – although I have one rascal who has figured it out and refuses to come up for a treat now. LOL. But all of my other three will come running for them and DONT give them the craisin until they get their butts inside! If not, they’ll take it and continue to try and get away. Positive reinforcement is the best way to get a bunny to do something Hope it continues to work!
