I’m going on vacation for a few weeks and having someone come over to feed/clean litter. Is there anything I should do to make sure my buns are OK while I’m not around – i.e. to make them miss me less? Last time I went on vacation overseas, all my pets (hamsters) passed away due to stress so I’m a bit nervous.

They have their own room and I let them out to free roam in the evenings/overnight. Should I stop this, and other “scheduled” things, to get them used to the fact they won’t be let out and their expectations should change? My buns will destroy, pee, get angry when they don’t get what they expect.

I don’t think there’s any need to stop your schedule before you leave. If there are certain problem areas in their habitat that are more often peed on/chewed up/destroyed, maybe you can try to think of ways to bunny-proof them before you leave so that they can’t make as much of a mess. Make sure to leave your bunny-sitter a note detailing signs of sickness (GI stasis, etc) and vet information in the case that something does happen.

I usually ask my bunny sitters to offer a favorite treat when they first come in. If the bunnies won’t take the craisin they offer, I ask the sitter to call me because something might be off. Definitely leave vet information and you can give your vet a heads up so they can charge you (and not the sitter) if necessary.

I wouldn’t worry about changing your schedule. In my experience, most bunnies are fairly adaptable even if they don’t love the change.

In my directions, I did write to give them a treat but I had the sitter try to feed treats when we met and even though my buns know the “treat noise,” they didn’t come over.

One of mine will go on a hunger strike if they’re angry, no hay, no treat, nothing. The other one will sit in the same spot without moving.
