On Monday I adopted a gorgeous female rabbit named Alex from my local shelter.

I hadn’t intended to bring anyone home, but after hearing her story abd meeting her I just couldn’t let her stay there another day.

Alex was abandoned in front of the shelter in July, her previous owners couldn’t even be bothered to formally surrender her. She went to foster care for awhile and had been bonded to another female. They had to separate her and her bondmate when rabbit adoptions just weren’t happening as often as they had been.

When I met her, seven months after living in the shelter, Alex broke my heart. I have NEVER seen an animal look so depressed. She looked like she had totally given up and resigned herself to dying in the shelter. Don’t misunderstand, this shelter is fantastic and dedicates so much to their animals, it wasn’t due to neglect.

Luckily for me Alex was the rabbit that would have done best with my Cid, and when I brought her home she introduced herself to him and took a nap right behind his cage.

It occurs to me that this might be the first real home she’s ever been in, I almost feel like she’s just learning how to be a bunny. She binkied three times yesterday and is slowly mastering the Bunny 500.

She’s a real sweetheart,  she’s nudged me several times. When she finally comes out of her shell I doubt she’ll leave me alone.

I’m curious though, do females groom themselves more often than males?

I was planning on coming on here to ask about gaining her trust, but with the progress she’s made (I haven’t even had her for 48 hours!) That doesn’t appear to be an issue.

Since Alex is my first female, is there anything I should know?

        She’s spayed by the way.

        Thanks in advance!

I don’t find that grooming is a gender thing with rabbits but I’ve never thought about this to tell you the truth.

It sounds like she has a wonderful home with you know :~) She’s lucky to have someone who is so concerned for her and will love and care for her no matter the circumstances.

I don’t think there is anything being a female rabbit that is different as far as care than a male.

Good to know! Thank you very much, Sarita! I really appreciate the prompt response!

She’s really remarkable, I never expected her to be so happy this quickly! I nearly did a binky myself after seeing those three of hers.

How wonderful that you brought her home. The poor baby, being abandoned and then separated from her mate. She must be happy because she knows she’s in a happy, forever home.

I also don’t find my female grooms more than my male. Some bunnies are a bit more obsessive about grooming than others, but doesn’t seem to be a gender thing.

You’re such a wonderful person for giving Alex such a wonderful home.

I have a little girl and am fostering a little boy. I honestly do not see any difference between the two. Except personalities and personal preferences. But that goes with any animal or person. Honestly the only difference I noticed was in poo smell. But other than that there is no real difference. I did notice grooming wise. My little girl cleans herself more often. But that is because she has longer fur. So more things get caught in her fur. And Ian has much shorter hair. So while he cleans himself, he doesn’t feel the need to because it doesn’t pick up as much gunk.

This is such a sweet story! I adopted a girl that was neglected and it took WAY longer than 48 hours for her to give me a nudge haha   It’s so sweet to see them finally lounge and binky and just have fun with you.  I always told everyone she was my “sassy” one, she definitely had a different personality then my boy bunny. He is laid back and can hardly be bothered with toys that he can’t eat, but she was always in my face and nosy.  They are too cute!
