Hello all! I am leaving this weekend and will not return home until Monday. My friend is coming tomorrow evening and Sunday to check on the bunny and feed him. I did not ask her to let him out for a run or anything because I am not sure she would be 100% comfortable with that. I am feeling extremely anxious about this… I just need support that he will be OK! Tomorrow morning I will let him out for a short run and Monday as soon as I get home he will have his regular like 5-6 hours out of his cage. Has anyone else ever had this situation? Am I handling it OK or should I have done something else?

He should be fine without run time over the weekend. He may give some rabbitude when you get home though I’ve gone away for weekends and have had friends watch mine, he’ll be fine as long as your friend comes by to feed and water him

I agree with Monkeybun. This is a rather short time away and with your friend checking on him daily, that should be okay for a couple of days. One thing I like to do is make sure my pet sitter gives a treat. If the treat is refused, then I worry more. (unless you have a bunny that is too scared of new people, then that would be normal) Just make sure to have your friend pays attention to the litterbox; that there is new poo in it every day.

I’ve gone away for just over a week before and the pet sitter fed, watered, and switched litterboxes once through the week. They did not let the bunnies out. I feel that unless the person is very familiar with the rabbit in question (a family member who lives in the house, for example), I wouldn’t recommend they let them out. Too much can go wrong if the bun is not supervised properly, or if the person realizes they can’t get them back in the cage. I rest easier knowing that they are confined in a safe space temporarily. And as long as your cage is of adequate size, a few days with limited exercise is fine. My buns are in a very large pen (4×8 feet), so lack of exercise isn’t really an issue anyways.

Now that it’s Saturday, a quick call to your sitter will put your mind at ease. If there is poop, less water (make sure she gives him fresh water and/or two bowls of it) and less food, he’s fine. Unlimited hay should be replenished. No exercise is OK. A treat is a good thing to do, as well as head pets and nice quiet conversation. As long as your friend has an emergency vet # handy, or can call you fast, you’re in good shape. I would enjoy your weekend.
