Hey all of you Bunny Moms and Dads, my little dude has been nipping and chewing at his cage bars frequently, and I  am not quite sure if this s healthy or not. Not to mention if I should attempt to stop the behavior. The only change that as been recent is my moving into a new apartment which I have given him more hopping space, the same cage set up, and rugs as before.

Is there anything that I can do?

          Good morning/afternoon/evening MommySmurph,

I’m new to bunny owning, so unfortunately have very little advice to offer, except the fact that I have only noticed this behavior in my Holland Lop when she is in the cage and I am in the same room. when she’s in the room on her own, not a peep to be heard, but when there is something going on in the room with her and she isn’t able to be part of it, this is when she chews at the bars…

She has become firm friends with one of my cats, and about the only thing that stops her from chewing the bars while somebody is doing something in the room is when he sits by the cage with her, which he does all the time… :S

So, it appears to myself that chewing the bars is her way of asking to be let out…

You say you have recently given him more hopping space, maybe he’s asking to hop?

Rascal chews his pen bars all the time. It got worse when I brought new bunny home but has quieted a little now. Normally when Rascal does this there isn’t much I can do to stop him. It’s probably not good for his teeth. I let my buns out often so they get enough attention but I think it’s just a habit for Rascal now. I remember when I adopted Rascal he was chewing on the bars as well at the rescue. If you can try and nip it in the bud now I would do so. Maybe let him out more frequently or some one gave me an idea to put hanging chew toys on the bars. That seemed to help a little with my bunny.

              Good Luck!

To put another note up, my bun is normally out about seventy five percent of the time I am in the room. It may be that he wants to get under my bed. Which is his new favorite place next to under my desk chair. Sigh, my bunny and his hiding. I have to start coaxing him out from under the bed forty minutes before I need to leave. I never know when I’ll get him out.

Buster is usually free roam, but I put him away when I’m out of the house. No matter if I’m in the room or not, I can hear him biting and rattling the bars. I think he just gets frustrated being locked up. Unfortunately I haven’t really thought of a way to stop it.
But, I have put some of those baby rings on his cage. I also twist tied some of those chewing logs that you can put on treat k bobs to where he usually chews. A lot of the time he’ll chew on the wood instead of the bars
