I have 5 buns and they love their treats but I would love to be able to make something extra special for them instead of buying treats. Does anyone have any good recipes for bunny treats?

Every once in a while when I have time on my hands I’ll make some treats, but the recipe differs every time. Really, you only need a few guidelines and some creativity .

Take some pellets and add water slowly until they become nice and crumbly – this is your base. From here, add any mixture of chopped bunny-safe fruit/veggies, and moisten with either pure juice or water until you achieve a dough-like consistency. Form the dough either into individual treats, or flatten it into a thin sheet for “crackers”. Bake at a low heat (200-250) until the treats are nice and hard, but not burnt – remember, the goal here is more to dehydrate the dough than to cook it.

My buns are total cookie monsters. They are total brats in the morning until I give them their cookie. I was giving them Oxbow digestive cookies and then ran out. Decided to make my own and they LOVE these. I’ve made about 3 batches so far. Much cheaper than buying treats. Remember to feed sparingly, since they do contain sugary ingredients.

            This recipe is from Rabbit.org.

            Brenda’s Homemade Bunny Biscuits

            1 small carrot, pureed
1/2 banana, mashed until really creamy
            1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup rabbit pellets, ground finely in a coffee grinder
1/4 cup ground oats, ground finely in a coffee grinder

Mix pureed carrot, banana and honey in a medium bowl. Add pellet powder and ground oats. Mix until blended. Knead in your hands for 1-2 minutes. Roll out the “dough” in 1/8- to 1/4-inch thick layers between sheets of plastic wrap. Cut into small cookies (about 3/4 inch across). Place cut shapes onto a parchment paper covered cookie sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes (check to make sure they are not browning too much). Turn off the heat and let the cookies sit in the warm oven for an hour or so.

Some tips for this recipe: Keep a close eye on them while baking. You don’t want them to get too dark. The recipe says 30 minutes but my oven only took about 22 minutes. And it’s important they are cut into evenly sized pieces so they bake uniformly. Store in a tight sealed container when completely cool. I don’t have a coffee grinder so I used a blender. I also used only 1/2 TBSP honey to reduce the sugar. Bunnies had no complaints.

for the oats do you mean like the kind used in oatmeal?

I cant wait to try this recipe out to see if my buns like it. Each bunny gets 1-2 treats a day..usually an oxbow treat and a craisin. Those small packages disappear pretty quickly with giving 5 a day and its such a pain to be ordering them so often. Thanks for the recipe!!!

I just finished getting the brenda recipe in the oven. (: I will post a pic and tell how the buns like them. (: I didn’t use honey or oats, so I just doubled the pellets, and added a little extra carrot. (:

I just made another batch today. My buns get very annoyed if they don’t get their morning cookie!

Oh, just a tip, instead of grinding, I put the pellets in a baggie and used a hammer.
