Hi everyone, I have a quick question, what is the best way to keep the smell down to the bare minimum of stinky-ness for a bunny?   I change his litter box daily, usually around bed time, but by the next day around the afternoon the smell is bad again, is there any suggestions on what can be done?

I had no issues what so ever with Sally. I changed her box every day. But I got Harley and he definitely had a musky smell to him. I wasn’t sure if it was the joys of hormones or not… How old is your bunny?

It’s being a boy and hormones start to rise from 10 weeks upwards. My Piglet who is fixed has barely any odour, Pascal my foster who is due to be done soon pongs out his litter tray….. It literally permeates the house, not to mention the volume but he is a bigger bun that all my others.

My buns all smelled terrible until they were fixed. Haha! I would say clean the litter box more often (if possible). That’s the only thing I can really think to keep down the smell of hormones!

Sounds like he needs to be fixed.

Mr. Java has absolutely no smell on him at all – I can only smell his pee when I’m dumping it (and that’s if I got lazy and didn’t dump it for like 5 days), and even then, it’s almost unnoticeable. His head usually just has a very light hay smell from shoving his face into the hay holder.

I clean litter boxes once a day and Harley STILL stinks! Luckily he got his man bits snipped today and I’m looking forward to him not having that male stench :/. So I don’t think changing the box more frequently would help lol but fixing should, or that’s what I’m praying for lol

The smell should decline now over the next 4-6 weeks as his hormone levels drop… So glad all went well with the neuter.

I’m cleaning his litter box daily, I saw somewhere there is something you can add to water to help with pheromone smells, anyone try that before?

Just wondering… Seeing as he has had an off tummy (other thread) it may be affecting the odour of his urine too. Maybe with the changes to diet you will also see a reduction in the odour. 8 weeks is very young to be a stinky boy bun.

True, and he isn’t acting sick except for the wet poo. Giving him a day or two to adjust and keeping a close eye on him now

i’m dealing with the same problem with my newest bun! i was going to get him fixed but another issue came up with another bun of mine so i had to pay for the vet bills for that. so him being fixed is being put off until the beginning of next month and MAN i cannot wait! haha. he’s so cute but such a stinky boy!

Oh yes. Unneutered boys are stinky.

I would not put any additives in the water. There’s no proof they actually work, and the taste may turn the bunny off from their water. You’ll really just have to deal with it until he’s neutered. Keep cleaning like you’re doing and take comfort in that he can get neutered when his testicles descend between 3.5-4 months.

I have tried the bi-odor for my rats and it didn’t work enough to get it again. Plus, they didn’t drink as much water so I wouldn’t recommend it. I could notice the smallest of a difference but its not worth the chance of your bunny refusing water because he will still stink either way.

That’s good to know, I don’t want to waste money on something that won’t work when I can use that money to buy treats for Tesla =D
