I’m not feeling very hopeful about Ms. Toffee – I took her in for a dental on December 20th and she got a trim and her gums were healthy.

Took her in yesterday – was really hoping to make it longer but I could tell she was having problems even eating her pellets and all of the gums were infected this time.  We are doing the 7 day pen-g shot treatment again which helped the last time – the vet said obviously we cannot pull all her teeth  and that this is probably going to be the only way to control her dental disease.  I hate putting her under anesthesia so frequently at her age but I don’t see much choice.  We are also doing metacam to help with the inflammation.

Of course I did the pen-g shot this morning and I think the needle was too long and it squirted out – going to have to gauge better next time and I have some other needles from last time.

I did email Dana Krempels as well to see if she had any other suggestions for treatment of gum disease.

It seems like I am going through the same thing with Toffee that I did with Pepe and I’m just not hopeful at this point.  Luckily she is still happy to eat her pellets and I added some shredded carrots to the mix and she likes those as well.

I’m very sorry to hear this, Sarita. I love Toffee. The poor girl, having so many problems with her mouth. I’m offering many ((((Healthy Teeth/Gums)))) Vibes.

I don’t really know anything about Pen-g, is it possible to use it as a preventative like I was doing with Bindi’s ears?

NEVER give up hope. There is always hope.

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear this! I hope things get better for her! I remember when I adopted Rascal his teeth were a little overgrown and they said he should have a trim if he doesn’t eat a lot of hay…but since then he’s eats a TON of hay which is great. I don’t think he has any teeth problems but I am going to take him for a check up in a couple months since it’s been almost a year since I adopted him and took him to the vet. Now Marley has bad teeth. I know that he isn’t having a good time eating. He BARELY eats hay. I have not refilled his hay since I got him. =( My mom got to look in the little scope thing that was in Marley’s mouth so I know the vet wasn’t fibbing or trying to get money out of us (though I doubt she’d do that anyways). His tooth is two times longer than it should be, pointed, and curved into his tongue. Poor guy. I’ll have to bring him back in 3 months after his procedure. Hopefully his teeth stay good after this but ya never know.

I hope your Toffee feels better soon. Sounds painful what she is going through. Poor girl. She’ll be in my thoughts.

                Ugh…Pen-G shots. I still can’t do those worth a darn. >

Sarita, I read in a lounge thread Toffee has already had her dental. How is she recovering?
                  {{{Toffee-bun}}}

I recall you used to get Pepe’s crowns trimmed down quite a bit and this helped between dentals. Is your vet able to do same for Toffee?
Did you have him on a pellet free diet? Do you think Toffee would go ok on one? Obviously not right now when it’s all she’s managing to eat, but I mean for after if she has improvement with the trimming.

Are there any particular molars that are worse then the others?

I read a couple things yesterday but had to rush of to work. One was about the use if a perioceutic gel after dental that would sit in the pockets in the gums. While I don’t imagine it would last long, it would add to the antibiotic treatment for a short time…

Oye, I’m so sorry.  I know that having to go through this again with another bunny must be so stressful.  I do remember that when we had to give pen-g shots, it was difficult because pen-g is thicker and though we wanted thin needles to make easier to inject, the meds wouldn’t easily go through the thin ones.  And yet the thicker needles were “icky” to inject into the skin.

It sounds  like Ms Toffeee is still able to enjoy life, but I understand the concern of what the near holds.   My thoughts are with you and I hope that things work out in a way that is the the easiest and least stressful  for both you and Ms. Toffee.

                        Sending positive vibes!

Gosh, I’m sorry Ms. Toffee is going through this again. I can’t help thinking that if a few or even many of the teeth culprits could be removed, she may happily eat a slurry of critical care or pellets mush out of a fat syringe at meal time. It’s more work for you, but it could be in the fridge like a shake, possibly? Just to give her a daily dose of nutrients while she’s struggling, or after she can’t get over the infections. Just throwing out inane ideas here.

{{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes for Toffee}}}}}}}}}}}} (Probably much more helpful than the above.)

                              Is she doing ok Sarita?

TBone – Toffee is 10 years old.

Jersey, she’s seems to be doing fine. Dana replied and said that she thought it was tooth root abscesses – I just thought gum disease since the vet mentions pus from the gums. She also suggested the pen g procaine/benzathine – not sure if it’s this combo or not so I’ll ask the vet when I bring her in for recheck. Dana is also of the opinion that she could be fine without all her teeth – I’m not so sure – I know some teeth (like Bobby) but not all teeth – just seems like a not so great quality of life even if you can feed them pellet mush.

So Ms. Toffee was back today for a recheck – she is down to 7.1 pounds, her weight normally ranges from 7.6 to 8.1 pounds according to the vet.

So we are going to try Orbifloxacin which is a new generation of enrofloxacin (baytril) to see how she responds to this. The vet says her teeth look better but she’s not convinced they are fully healed and she does believe it’s root tooth abscesses. She also felt that pen-g procaine/benzathine wouldn’t make any difference than just the pen-g procaine injections.

She can also start to feel “points” under the jawline area because the root seems to be pushing through – same as with Pepe.

She also recommended trying a bowl of critical care – I’ve never had success with any of my rabbits taking this willingly but I’ll give it a try – she eats her pellets just fine.

My vet says that she doesn’t thing at Toffee’s age that pulling all the teeth (she’s already pulled some) is really a great idea – neither do I. She says that rabbits unlike cats and dogs really must chew their food – they cannot eat their food whole like cats and dogs (I thought this was interesting).

So we’ll try the orbifloxacin and recheck her in 2 weeks.

Tooth abscesses can be quite persistent. However, that seems like a bit of good news that her gums looked better and so maybe the new meds will help finish up the healing. Healing vibes for Toffee!

Actually the new drug is Zeniquin (marbofloxacin) and you only administer it once a day (love that).

We started her on the Zenquin and it still doesn’t seem as if she’s eating much – I know it’s only 3 days though – I put out a bowl of critical care to see if she’d eat it -hard to know right now – I’ll see if any has been eaten when I get home. Hopefully she won’t fling the bowl around and spread critical care all over the room – she was sniffing it suspiciously.

She actually has been eating the pellets just fine but I could try wetting them – I think the bowl is what she is suspicious of – I put everything on the carpet – pellets, greens, treats – she has a water bowl though that she uses. If this is untouched then I’ll try wetting and fluffing her pellets.

Can I get some vibes for Ms. Toffee? She is still not eating to full capacity and yesterday I accidentally got her with the vacuum cleaner (it was really her fault, but she is without fault so therefore, it’s my fault) – she got stuck in the suction – I felt AWFUL – I wondered this morning since it was on her face if it caused damage – I’m monitoring her and she has a follow up next Monday for a recheck and to check her weight again.

It looks like there is a few more days of zenquin as well, but even with this and the pen-g shots, she still doesn’t appear to be eating although there is plenty of pooping…

Have you tried Romain Lettuce? Velvet eats WAY more Lettuce than pellets or anything else, well, if I gave in she’d prolly eat more dried pineapple than lettuce but, she loves Romaine lettuce and eats about 5 large leaves everynight. She lets me know around 5:00pm each night when I forget to put out that darn lettuce, lol

It was probably just a strange sensation for her but no harm.

Well Ms. Toffee is back at the vet to check her weight so we’ll see. The antibiotics did cause some gooey poop and I think it did upset her stomach a bit because she didn’t eat much greens but I stopped the antibiotics yesterday and it seemed she ate more greens (but then again it’s difficult to tell).

I do think she is going deaf and blind though – her eyes are cloudy and I have to get close to her to get her to hear me when she’s snoozing – I guess that just comes with age.
