Now Keelie’s not eating

Keelie hasn’t really been the same since Carbun died.  She was never really the most social bunny, but she’s become even less so now that she’s on her own.  Attempts to bond her with Kaylee have been unsuccessful so far, but they’ve also been sporadic.  She’s gone through periods where she hasn’t eaten very much but she’d still been pooping.   Now she’s not really eating much at all, just a little nibble of her fruits & veggies, and she’s not pooping very much.

 I’ll be giving her some critical care in a little bit, and some pineapple juice.  And likely some hairball meds.  Maybe some simethicone.  Both the main vets we use are closed for the day, and the emergency vet is useless with rabbits.

 Any other other thoughts on what to do?

I think that the critical care is the best idea. I wouldn’t do hairball medicine or pineapple juice – it’s old school and really doesn’t help. I wonder if she is having dental problems? Please keep us updated.

Still not eating today although she did at least take a craisin – she wouldn’t even do that last night. Called and made an appt with the vet for 2:30 and got out the juice and critical care etc to give her, and then the vet’s office called and moved the appt to 9am. But I gave her the stuff anyway, might as well see about getting something into her.

Sarita, the pineapple juice might be old school and might not really work, but she’s also not really drinking so at least it’s some additional liquid into her.

Other than the not eating/pooping she seems to be acting normally – she’s out of her condo right now, was hopping around a bit, grooming. She’s not hunched over, doesn’t appear to be in pain. I’m trying to remember her behaviour from the last time she had stasis.

Vet says maybe some very slight signs of maloclusion but nothing that should be causing any problems, molars look fine. She does feel a little bloated but not horribly distended so it’s likely very early in whatever is going on. Can’t feel any blockages or masses. Gave her some subQ and some metaclopramide there and sent her home with some metaclopramide as well. Basically just said to keep up with that and the forcefeeding and if she’s not eating/pooping on her own in a day or so when we look at more aggressive action.

I’m sorry to hear Keelie is unwell. ((((((((((((((((Healing vibes))))))))))))))) on their way to you.
Sometimes even a little bit wrong with their teeth is enough to set them off their food. Mimzy is actually quite sensitive when it comes to needing a dental and he’s currently overdue.
Do you have any infant simethicone to give her? As long as it’s the kind that doesn’t have xylitol or other genetically modified sugars in it. It should help ease the bloating somewhat. I think the dose is 0.3-0.6 mls once every hour for three hours, then twice a day after that, although I don’t think you can overdose a bun on it. You can ask your vet what they recommend.

Not much change with Keelie. She ate about 1/4 of a strawberry overnight, and I saw her eating a little bit of parsley today. There were about 3 tiny little poops on the floor. I’ve been keeping up with the critical care and meds. For a sick bunny she has a lot of energy and runs like crazy when you try to pick her up.

Regarding the teeth, sometimes just a look isn’t enough. Late last year Jersey got some points taken of her molars and it made such a difference. It wasn’t until the vet had her sedated and felt along the teeth that she found all the trouble spots. Some she could see but couldn’t see them when Jersey was conscious. All she saw in the 1st inspection was more saliva on one side and told me that was usually a clue something was up.

I agree with Jersey about the teeth – this issue has come up with my rabbits as well. Sedating and a good look could show further issues with the teeth.

Kaylee is still not eating a lot of hay or pellets but she is eating greens and pooping now. She seems to have very particular taste in food at the moment. Strawberries and parsley are great, she doesn’t really want cilantro, not interested in bananas. Raisins and craisins are fine. I have no idea if it could be her teeth or not given that some of the things she won’t eat are soft or the same consistency as some of the things she will.

I really think she’s still grieving for Carbun, and wish that it was easier to bond her with Kaylee.

I don’t know but it really sounds like a dental problem to me. I would have the vet double check the teeth if it were my rabbit and no improvement.

Just wanted to do another quick update – Keelie is still doing well. Actually I think she’s eating more now than she has since Carbun died. Poop is looking good, appetite is great, she’s eating all her fruits and veggies and pellets and even a lot of the hay, which she’s never really been all that fond of. Now just to work on trying to get her and Kaylee bonded.

Good to hear that Keelie is improved. Bunnies can eat spinach? I always thought it was too high in oxalates like kale. I’ll have to give it a try with mine.
