        Hi,

I am new to this site so any info would be really helpful thank you

I recently got my first bun – a gorgeous little grey and white lop, called William, who we hope will be a house rabbit and soon have the run of our place!

When we bought him, he and two other buns were in a pen with two guinea pigs.  My boyfriend and I have two piggies too and were wondering about them getting along with William…

I’ve read that obviously buns and pigs shouldn’t be housed together, which is fine as weren’t thinking of doing that.

But I just wanted to know how they would get along and if it was safe?  I’ve since read somewhere about bacteria on a rabbits nose being a problem to piggies but I didn’t know if this is just if they are housed together?

        Thanks in advance!

        Natasha x

I’m not sure I would risk it since your bunnies nose will be involved while playing. I found this:

          http://www.petmd.com/exotic/conditions/respiratory/c_ex_gp_bordetella_bronchisepta_infection

          On Page 2:
“Other animals, such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and mice may also be infected with these bacteria without showing any signs of illness. If you have multiple animals in your home, you should practice safe handling. Keeping the animals separate, and washing hands and clothes between handling your animals are some of the best policies you can practice in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. ”

I hope that helps! Maybe someone else here will know a little more.

I am not well-educated about guinea pigs, but there is an educational site about guinea pigs that has been around for awhile that I refer to and this is their take on guinea pigs and rabbits (though i can’t fully tell if they are against housing them together –which you already said you wouldn’t, or if playing together is a no no too) http://www.guineapigcages.com/rabbits.htm

I have heard of people allowing supervised visits/playtime so you may get a variety of answers and will have to choose what you feel is best for you.

I’ve read here that guinea pigs and rabbits do get along (I think Lesley may have gotten a piggie as a friend for Noot before he crossed the Bridge a couple of years ago.) However, one of the dangers was the use of the same shavings for bedding and litter. You cannot use cedar chips or shavings, or pine shavings, for a rabbit. It gives off fumes that have long range respiratory effects that lead to illness. They are fine for piggies however, and that’s why they’re sold for them.

So be sure to keep their habitats quite separate.

Rabbits can give guinea pigs bortadella and pasturella – it’s not a good idea to pair them at all which sounds like this is not your intention.

Do they get along, well, I think they tolerate each other since neither are a threat to each other.
