So, when we got Ian we were given the pellets that the rescue was feeding him. Which was a mix of alfalfa and timothy of pellets but the brands of the pellets are something that we can not get since the local stores do not sell it. When I went to go feed Ian today his pellets I noticed that they were infested with bugs/maggots. I know that the bugs/maggots are not good for him so I pulled the pellets and threw them and the rest of the bag away. I’m just worried about how to compensate for him quitting cold turkey. I don’t want his digestive system going completely out of whack. But at the same time I don’t want him getting sick from the bugs.  What should I do????

Oh, that’s awful. You scoured the dishes and wiped down his habitat too, didn’t you? I assume that vinegar and water will kill a bug or maggot, but I’m not sure. It couldn’t hurt.

That said, I think you can introduce a healthy, plain timothy based pellet right away. Watch for a bit of poopy butt, but it would be fairly normal for a change of food so I wouldn’t worry. I’d be more concerned about spotting the stray bug on Ian. You don’t have much choice since you can’t find this brand (good). I would start him on some Oxbow or Kaytee pellets, limit to quarter cup, and let him get used to a better brand. Give him a lot of good hay the whole time so he can be steady in his digestion that way.

Yes, introduce a new pellet right away – as long as it’s high quality, I doubt there will be any problems other than getting him to eat the pellets as rabbits can be weirdly fussy about their pellets.

Poor bun! As long as he has plenty of hay and water and veggies, it’s alright if he doesn’t take to the new pellets right away – just keep offering them.

Can you contact the rescue and see if you can have/buy some more pellets for the slower switch over? I think switching him over cold turkey will work out fine but if you’re worried it might give you some peace of mind.

Okay, thanks guys! I gave him some leftover pellets (that are still good) from when Skipper used to eat them.

And I wish MoveDiagonally. I would have just bought more (apparently stores in Dover sell Oxbow pelletes) or gotten some from the rescue if they weren’t so far away. We drove up there for an 1 1/2 to go get Ian to foster him. =/
