So, two days ago I was running low on hay. I went to the store, bought the same type I always buy and filled up their hay holder. They wont touch it!! They are completely uninterested in the hay. They are still nibbling on their oat hay, eating their pellets, and their veggies — they just wont eat the hay.

Today I went out and bought some oxbow timothy hay and they have nibbled on that a bit, but still not too interested.

Anyone have any idea as to why they arent interested in the timothy hay? They usually love it!

Maybe old season hay that’s been packaged up? Is it more dusty then usual?
Did you get the same cut of hay?

A friend of mine once got a bale and all her rabbits flatly refused to eat it. She took it back the next day. The fodder store exchanged it for her and problem solved- they all ate the next lot. I wondered if they picked up on a foriegn smell in that first bale.

My own have been less enthusiastic about a new bale from time to time. Eventually though, they come to like it as much as the last.

Since hay is grown outdoors and isn’t a manufactured product, there are a lot of factors that can change each cut slightly. Can you do returns? Maybe you could try and see if they’ll be interested in a different batch. Meanwhile, as long as they’re still munching on the oat hay, they should be alright.
