I recently got a pet bunny off of craigslist. I’m not sure how old he is but he is a he. I picked him up last Thursday which was Jan 17th. I gave him a few days to settle in and he has free roam of my one bedroom apartment, ONLY when he is under my supervision. When I am gone or asleep he is back in his cage. Anyways, to the point, when I go to pet him he will slowly put his head down to the floor while I pet him on his head. I have only done this once or twice since it looks like he doesn’t like it, but as I said, I’m new to bunnies and I’m not sure of their behavior. I just want to know if he likes me petting him or if he is laying down like that because he is scared.

They like having their heads pet!! If hes bowing his head to you and letting you pet him, thats a good sign. If he didnt want you to pet him, he would run away. Rabbits bow to each other to try to get their partner to groom them, so hes probably asking for pets

When he puts his head down he’s saying ‘that’s right master, keep doing what you’re told’ A good website to help you decipher what he’s saying is: http://language.rabbitspeak.com/

Thank you guys! It just seems like he’s scared. And I don’t want to stress him out by petting him or doing something if he isn’t ready yet. But you’re right, a few days ago if I tried to pet him, he would run. Thank you for the replies!

                Welcome to the forums!

Yup, that’s a great sign…he’s just getting all comfortable while he enjoys having his head pet . Do let us know if you have any other questions!

Sounds like he loves it! Bunnies who don’t want to be petted will just hop away. When they really enjoy it, they get their little heads flat to the floor to really enjoy it.

Yep, I agree with the others. If I hold out my hand like I’m going to pet Wooly, he will hold his head up to meet my hand. Then after I start petting him, he will start lowering his head until its down by the floor. Sounds like you’re bunny is just liking his pets.

You’re bunny is loving it! Willow always bows her head down when I go to stroke her. If I stroke her on the back, she puts her head down to say “My back feels nice but what I really want is my head to be stroked.”
