My 8 week old lionhead suddenly has one ear that is always limp, while the other one is normal.  He occasionally shakes his head but no scratching or itching that has been noticeable.  Is his ear supposed to do that?

Since your little guy is at 8 weeks it’s around the time that lop bun’s ears drop. Do you know if your lionhead is a lop mix? If not and you’re really worried. It never hurts to take your bun to a rabbit savvy vet. If you haven’t done it already for his/her general check up you can always bring him/her in and ask your vet about it.

I know I’m not much help. But I’m pretty sure others will be by to give their input.

We are pretty sure he is a lionhead, but I suppose the pet store could have not known for sure.  We are taking him to the vet in a couple weeks but I’d rather be safe and try to find out if something was really wrong, or if it is a normal behavior.

Skipper’s Mama is right on – sometimes bunnies can be lop mixes and end up having one ear up and one ear down. We call them helicopter buns around here…they’re adorable . However, it’s impossible for us to confirm that something is or isn’t wrong with him…I suggest an initial vet check-up to make sure all his parts are in order, and establish a relationship leading up to a neuter.

Most pet store rabbits are not pure breeds. He might be a mix and have loppy ears. Do you mind posting a pic of his ears? Maybe seeing the way they look will give an idea of whether or not its off.

Oh, I posted my response before I saw yours…I’m glad that you have plans to take him to the vet!

I know it is hard to see because he is all black, but this is how his ears always are.  We have also noticed that he keeps flopping his head towards that side.

Just looking at the picture, he looks like a one lop bunny. I would wait and see what the other ear does. How far away is the vet visit?

The vet visit is next thursday but I am getting concerned because he will tilt and twitch his head towards one side. Then again he only does that for a few minutes and then is totally fine.

Sometimes if there is something bothering inside — an infection, mites etc, the ear can drop a bit. The fact he is showing symptoms of something bothering him, shaking his head, flopping head to that side, then that does sound like something is going on that needs to be seen. I know you have an appointment for next Thursday — a week from this Thursday right?  Is there any way to get him into the vet sooner?

I believe there is an emergency vet that we could go to it just can get kind of expensive! I think I will watch him for another day or so to see if these symptoms continue and if they do I will bring him in. Thank you all for the help, and any other suggestions or input would still be greatly appreciated!

First off, I want to say your bun is super adorable!

Is there any way they could bump your appointment ahead without you having to go to the emergency vet? Maybe they could make it for later this week.

I wouldn’t go to the emergency vet for this. E-vets are for actual emergencies (labored breathing, listlessness, not eating drinking for 12-24 hours). E-vets provide necessary treatment for these things, but not just general check-ups. The vets there may not even be equipped to test for or diagnose something like that. See if you can move your other appt up…

                                  Oh he is super cute!
Maybe he’s tilting his head that way because he’s off balance now that the ear is flopped?
                                  Heh.. Just a thought.
Hope you can get him in soon to rule out any infection.
I bet if you call the vet and let them know he’s having symptoms they will squeeze you in sooner.

Even with the symptoms you describe, I don’t think you should take him to an emergency vet. There isn’t much they could do anyway. See if you can move your appointment up instead.

Thank you for the ideas. We are just going to try to get him in earlier and keep an eye on him. He still seems happy and eating and drinking and playing so I don’t think it’s anything life threatening.
