        Hi,

I have an almost two year old male Holland Lop.  For the past few days I have found giant cecotropes in his cage.  He has unlimited amounts of hay and fresh water.  I also feed him Oxbow pellets.  He hasn’t had any veggies or fruits lately.  Should I take him to a vet or just make sure that he is getting enough hay and water?  Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to help him?

        Thanks,

        Missy

I don’t think that’s unusual. Are you positive they’re cecotropes? They might just be unusual stool. I wouldn’t worry unless it’s soft stool. What’s the texture of them?

Has there been any change to his environment or food lately? How long is the “past few days”? Uneaten or excess cecals indicates a digestive imbalance of some kind, and if it’s not due to an external change I would take him to a vet just to be sure.

I would also get a head of romaine or green leaf lettuce in the house to feed him daily right away. Fewer pellets, more greens is the way to keep him regular, not the other way around. The pellets should only be 1/4 cup daily. The greens are about a handful, and the hay is unlimited. He needs more balance in his diet.
