        Hello,

I have a 2 year old mini lop that we adopted about 4 months ago named Lola. She is neutered and was a perfect fun bunny.  I took her to the vet last week because I noticed she was breathing louder than usual and is sneezing a lot..  The vet said she feels that she has Snuffles and gave me an antibiotic to give her for 10 days.  We are on day 5 of the medicine and I am wondering if it is working.  At some points it seems as though she has her energy back, but at other times (like right now) I feel like she isn’t getting any better.  I am familiar with the purring sound she makes when she is happy but tonight she was laying down and started breathing loudly again and then had a chattering sound from her teeth.  Almost like how we do when we are cold.  Also, her eyes are squinted and their was a little whining sound coming from her. She isn’t asleep because she will move every couple of minutes.  She is still eating/drinking and going to the bathroom and still sneezing.

I want to call the vet back but they are closed until Monday.  I don’t know how long it usually takes for the medicine to kick in and I am becoming very worried that it’s not working.  Can someone explain this tooth chattering sound? Also, how long does the medicine take?  Is she going to be ok?

         Thanks,

        worried owner

I think 7 days before you’d see effects of an antibiotic??? I’m sorry, I’m not certain. Is there anywhere you can get her seen today?
Did the vet that treated her listen to her chest?

Is she tipping her head up a bit when doing the tooth chattering?

The behaviours you describe do sound concerning especially if unlike her normally.
The noises *could* be because she’s congested… But pain can be so hard to detect in rabbits and it would be better to have her seen and any pain addressed if that’s what is going on.

Does she have any nasal discharge? If the antibiotics aren’t doing anything then you will need more tests to determine what the cause is.

All the animal hospitals are closed today, I’m calling her vet early tomorrow morning to see if she can see her ASAP. She does have some nasal discharge, I think their was more a couple days ago so I’m hoping its going away. The room she is in stays fairly cool at about 70 degrees. Yes, thevetdid listen to her chest but she didn’t tell me if anything sounded abnormal. She did see her nasal drainage and I told her that she has been sneezing a lot. When she was chattering her teeth she was laying down, her eyes were squinted, and her lips were kind of twitching. I’ve never seen her lips twitch like that so seeing that and hearing the chattering really caught my attention.

We are going to keep giving her medicine and keep an eye on her. I’m just scared bc I don’t know if her breathing is normal at this point after her having medicine for 5 days.

is this chattering at all similar to a tooth grinding sound? teeth grinding is a sign of pain in bunnies. i’ve heard that firsthand. neither of my rabbits has made a chattering sound though. i hope the vet can see her tomorrow.

Lola is doing much better! I haven’t heard her have any more tooth chattering and her breathing is much better. Up until yesterday morning she still had very very little energy and wasn’t even responding to anything around her. yesterday afternoon and all today she has been very playful and we have heard a lot of happy grunts. Today would have been her last day of the antibiotic but when I filled the syringe the medicine was very cloudy and looked like it had little chunks in it (it is usually crystal clear). We made the decision not to give her the last dose because it seemed like something was wrong with it and with her looking much better I didn’t want to take any risks and make her even more sick.

Thank you all for your comments and help! I’m hoping things keep going in a positive direction!

That’s great! Perhaps the antibiotics kicked in finally. I suggest just reporting in to your vet. Perhaps even ask if worth continuing with meds a little longer since youve only just seen positive results. They may give you more doses without you having to take her in.

Great to hear that she’s doing better! I agree with jerseygirl about talking to your vet to see if her progression in improvement has been normal, and that it might be worth giving her just a few more days of meds.

                          Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give an update…Lola has been doing much much better, at least I thought up until tonight. She has been very happy and playful lately, pretty much just being a bunny. Tonight I was sitting on the floor with her reading and I notices she was breathing kind of hard again…than within a few minutes she started the teeth chattering again. I haven’t heard this since the first time I posted on here. The other day she peed outside of her cage for the first since since we have gotten her Nd I though that was very strange bc she always makes it to her litter box. Now that she is chattering her teeth I will definitely be giving the vet a call first thing in the morning! I’m thinking maybe she peed on the carpet the other day bc something was wrong, but I just didn’t think about it.

Hopefully, my next comment on here will be a positive one :-/ I just feel so discouraged, it doesn’t matter what I’ve been doing lately but poor Lola can’t catch a break.

                                  Hello fellow binkybunnies,

Lola went to the vet yesterday and still has a pretty mean case of Snuffles. She is back on an antibiotic for 21 days!! It’s very difficult to give Lola medicine because she truly hates being picked up and putting her in a bunny burrito is a definite no. It doesn’t help that the medicine smells and probably tastes horrible. Hopefully, these next few weeks fly by.

The vet said that the tooth chattering (similar to what we do when we are cold) was most likely a sign of Lola having a fever. Hopefully, my next update will be a great one! 🙂
