Any tips on getting Seymour to eat more hay?  Should i give him less veggies? He is stubborn and will hold out for his veggies/pellets.

How many cups of pellets do you give him? How old is he?

            Have you tried different hay?

I had the same problem when I adopted Royal. His previous owner hardly gave him hay — he mostly ate pellets. It took him two months to finally start eating hay!! I think he picked up the hay eating habits from his rabbit partner, Elvira. You can try different types of hay, limit his pellets, and make sure hes checked out by a vet to make sure he doesnt have any teeth problems which could be why he isnt interested in eating the hay.

My foster Pascal wasn’t interested in hay until I put it in a cat litter tray so he could sit in the middle of it and poop whilst noshing.

I give him 1/4 cup of pellets and about 2 cups, sometimes more, of various veggies.

mischief was like that thumper would eat the hay and mischief would eat everything else what my sister and i did was put less pellets in and alot more hay in and i would make sure the pellets were at the bottom with the hay at the top with whatever veggies in the middle, mischief soon got the idea that he had to eat the hay first, he still eats the pellets first before the hay but he does eat quite alot of the other food we give him.

                    hope this helps

Many bunnies prefer one type of hay more than another. It’s a small initial expense since you can’t get a sampler of hays. Get the smallest bag of hay available of these kinds, and try them one at a time because once you hit on one Seymour likes you won’t have to keep taste testing.

Timothy is the most common. Softer hays would be Orchard Grass, or Second cut Timothy Hay (can be found online by American Diner). Dryer seeming hay but quite tasty is Oat Hay. Mature Oat Hay is even stiffer, but my bunny devours it. It’s got little tasty pieces that she just loves and it makes her coat shiny.

Broam is a kind of blend I think. All of these hays are nutritious and you won’t be missing anything if you select one instead of another. Just find the one your bunny prefers and keep it stocked up in his hay bin and in the house from that point on.

update: I started mixing most of his pellets in with his hay and now he is eating it! i guess he was just wary of it or something….now he can’t seem to get enough. Thanks for the tip!

Fiona will eat hay, but ONLY alfalfa hay…she’s only 3 months old, so apparently it’s okay to feed it to her. I’ve tried timothy, and she refuses to eat it. Anyone think this is a problem? Should I get her off of alfalfa hay? I don’t want her starving
