My Holland lop rabbit has had some major dental problems. The first initial problem he had a broken back tooth on his lower jaw that abscessed and caused the teeth to be out of line this has also resulted in his lower incisors to not grow anymore aswell this was in july 2012. His teeth now have malocclusion and because of that I have his teeth filled and trimmed every 2-3 months.  In December just 2 days before I had his teeth scheduled to be done he broke his front top incisors in the cage, I took him in right away to the vet and his teeth were trimmed and the vet said the teeth were ok just had him on metecam and antibiotics. His top incisors grew fast  and I had to get them trimmed again just last week.. just yesterday I was checking his teeth over and noticed his top right incisor has a crack right across it and the tooth is still growing I have been trying to get a hold of his vet and if I don’t get a hold of him by tomorrow I am planning on just getting an appointment because its causing the broken part of the tooth to move forward as the tooth is growing.

what I would like to know has anyone had a similar experience to this that there rabbits lower incisors have stopped growing? also has any one had a rabbit with teeth probems like this before? he had no dental issues before al this happened I understand this was all caused by his broken back tooth… I am just worried about him.

I have a Netherland Dwarf who is about 4 or 5 (not sure of true age though since he is a rescue) – he was dumped off at a guinea pig rescue because he wasn’t eating – turns out he had severe dental issues – he had an abscess as well and lost all of his lower left molars. Since then he has had to have regular dental trims every 3 months. Netherland Dwarfs and Holland Lops are notorious for having dental problems due to their short “smushed” faces. Since rabbits are bred based on looks rather than temperament or health, it’s a problem.

It is worrisome and I hate that he must have these trims for the rest of his life.

I also have 2 seniors who have regular dental trims (due to old age mainly) and they get trims approximately every 3 months now as well.
