So, my baby bunny is poorly with a chest infection. he has been sneezing for a couple of days now and has also been more subdued, with fewer binkies and bunny 500’s.

The vet gave him an injection of metacam and we have baytril to give him every day for five days. I’ve already noticed that he seems to be feeling better as the wheezing has stopped.

when we got him aged 9 weeks he had just recovered from a similar chest infection and now he has another one, I’m so worried for him!

so now I’m wondering if this is going to be a regular thing, or has he just been unlucky?

        thanks guys for any help!

I’m sorry your bunny is unwell. If it were my bunny, I would ask the vet to do a culture. If you are dealing with something like Pasteurella that is causing the infections, it’s helpful to know to determine the best treatment. Did your vet suggest anything like this?

5 days doesn’t seem very long for an antibiotic…definitely consider a culture if this is on-going.

Thanks for the replies, the bet did mention pasteurella but said she wanted to try baytril first before doing any cultures. We have to go back on the fifth day for another checkup and she said we’d take it from there. Before we got him he was kept outside so I’m also wondering if the big change in the environment has had some affect on his chest?

I’ve never heard of that happening (change of temp) but I really don’t know. I would say it’s more likely bacterial. Maybe something he was born with. No reason to panic, though, many rabbits have Pasteurella and it is manageable. I agree with Sarita, 5 days of antibiotics doesn’t seem like enough time to treat any type of infection.

                  Thanks for the info!

He already seems to be feeling better, he’s been running around with lots of binkies this morning and has even managed to jump onto the sofa for cuddles for the first time!

He’s his usual cheeky self today, into everything he shouldn’t!

That’s good! A naughty bunny usually means a happy bunny!

Just to update, dusky had his checkup at the vets last night, he’s doing really well but we are continuing the Baytril for another 5 days just in case. Hopefully that’ll sort it out for him so then we can get him neutered!
