Hi! I live in California so it’s usually warm around here, but lately it’s been VERY cold. My family keeps my bunny in a room built of windows, like a sun room, so it’s usually colder in that room. I was wondering how to keep my bunny warm? Without turning on the heat because that costs some money. Is there any other ways to keep a bunny warm? Thanks in advance!

you might want to make a hidey hut like the one in the pic from Ava

Hi Momo, OK…Several tricks that can also be used to keep them cool. Get a clay brick and sit it near the fire or even pop it in the oven for 5 or 10 minutes. Wrap it in a towel and put that in the hutch. Hot water bottles will also work. Warmed tiles placed in their cage (not to hot) and wrapped so they don’t get burned. Get some bottles of boiling water in canteens and place them under his cage so the heat rises but he is not in direct contact. You can also buy pet sized heat mats that are very low voltage that you could slide under his cage but you would have to be cautious of wires etc.

How cold is cold? Rabbits can tolerate cooler temperatures better than warmer ones, so he may be fine in there. If not, put a box in with some shredded paper or fleece that he can snuggle into for warmth, thats the cheapest way, and no wires needed to be worried about

Just thought I’d add that photo directly to this thread… Very interesting ideas about heating the bricks, etc..hadn’t heard that before.

Just beware of the insulation sticking out around the hole…it would be best if you didn’t put the foam insulation around the hole area just to be sure that your rabbit won’t be able to chew on it.

I saw that insulated bin system somewhere else, but I think it was designed for outdoor cats. I’m not sure how well that would work for a rabbit without an additional modification. Rabbits prefer two entrances to prevent from feeling trapped. Some people make hidey houses and they’re disappointed when their buns won’t use them. We recommend they cut a second doorway, and suddenly their buns love them. In the wild, rabbit warrens are a series of tunnels and there are always multiple ways out. Having a second hole cut in these bins would also allow for better ventilation, especially since the bunny would likely use the box as a litterbox as well.

Momo, what kind of window coverings do you have in that room? I know they make those “energy-efficient” panels that are a thicker, lined material. That should work to hold in heat (and in the summer, it would keep it cooler in there).

Rabbits are not very sensitive to cold, in Sweden rabbits are legally kept outdoors all year round. They have to have an insulated (with styrofoam or f ex straw) shelter that’s elevated from the ground (standing on legs etc) and they must be given fresh drinking-water twice a day in the winter (because the water will freeze in bottles and bowls). Rabbits kept this way require no extra heating. But of course it will only work if the rabbit is gradually used to cold weather, i e if it’s not moved indoors after summer but is kept outdoors. In Sweden the temperature in the winter very often drops below zero F. Whatever temperaure you get in California, I doubt it will be too cold for your rabbit to cope. He will get thicker fur and probably need a little extra food because keeping warm requires energy.

Our wild rabbits are not the same as the American wild rabbits, but our pet rabbits are the same kinds as yours.

I would get a thermometer and see what the temp is in the room rabbits do better in colder temps. rabbits dont do well in temps below 40 degrees. if it is 58 degrees they will survive.

My house gets down to 55deg at night and the rabbits are fine.

I would just make sure there is an enclosed space he can sleep in – a smaller space like a box will hold his body heat better than sleeping out in the open. You could even line it with hay to keep it warmer, but he may pee on it.

I’m concerned because I always thought rabbits were supposed to be cold so I’ve never done anything to keep Belle warm. I live in Scotland and it was snowing yesterday! Only 2 degrees here I think!! Should I be giving Belle cosy things too?

                                  Edit: I just checked that’s like 35F I think.  It’s normally about 50-55F.
