My husband and I are in the proccess of adopting a 2yr old male Flemish/lop mix.  He is not going to be neutered by the animal shelter before we get him as their vet isn’t rabbit savvy.  According to our contact there, he is handled daily and has not shown signs of aggression that I have heard most unneutered males exibit.

I have a rabbit savvy vet in my area that I have already contacted about doing the proceedure, but since he will be my first bunny, I want to get some more experienced opinions.  Should I try to schedule the proceedure as soon as I can after bringing him home and get all of the “trauma” (neutering and adjusting to a new home) over at once, or should I give him some time to settle in to his new home before he gets done?

        Thanks!

I would get it done right away, within the first few days/week. Neuters are pretty easy on boys. Your issue is likely to be territorial marking/urine spraying rather than aggression. And this behavior will be increased in a new home.

I agree with Beka, neuter right away and get it done.

I would definitely schedule a vet visit with blood work right away, and then ask the vet whether you should do the procedure immediately or wait a bit for him to settle in. I don’t think it will be an issue.

Thanks everyone! You are confirming what I was thinking, but didn’t know if the stress of it all would be too much. Once I have a better idea if/when he is coming home, I will try to schedule the vet appointment for the same day or next day.

Well, it’s a good thing were haven’t completed the adoption yet…our landlord informed us that he is not renewing our lease
The rental housing market in the area has inflated alot over the past few years due to the natural gas industry moving in, so he thinks he can get more for our place than we can currently pay.
We have a couple of months left, but now the apartment hunt begins. Hopefully we can find a new place soon, get settled, and then bring a furry bundle of joy into our lives.

                    Aw man that sucks

When are you apartment hunting, be sure to ask if the apartment is pet friendly. My dad and I went around to look at apartments and the first thing that we asked is if they allow rabbits. The apartment does as ‘rabbits are caged animals,’ which is a load of bull since she has the entire place to run But check up on that when you are looking for places to live.

Sorry to hear that…apartment hunting sucks! Like Chacha said, definitely make sure to ask about rabbits specifically. When I was looking for apartments, I had people tell me anything from “rabbits are not allowed, period” to “oh rabbits don’t count as pets, you would only have to pay a pet fee for for cats and dogs”.

As to your question, though, I agree with the others that a neuter right away is the best choice .
