For the fun of it, I am wondering how are your bun(s) housed?

Chacha has gone from  XL dog kennel (which I plan to keep when Chacha picks out a friend at the shelter in the future through the bonding process), to x-pen bunny, to open condo (current) and free range. I have found that she is trust worthy and just sleeps during the day when I am at school or work, so it works out best for the both of us. Very rarely will she chew on carpet (nothing that perfume can’t fix) but otherwise, she is a happy bunny. It truly amazes other people when they find out she uses a litter box and doesn’t live in a cage

This morning Chacha bun woke me up by jumping onto my bed (I keep a little fuzzy cat condo next to my bed) and kissing me awake

My buns have their own room. I am so jealous of all of you with free range bunnies!!! I dont think its possible for me because besides the bunnies I also have three dogs and 6 cats. I dont worry much about the cats bothering them, but I dont know about the dogs since they like to chase squirrels, rabbits, whatever, when they are outside. I do spend a lot of time with them in their room though!

Frapp went from a traditional pet store cage (I didn’t know any better), to a 2 level grid cage that I purchased online (still ended up not being appropriate), to now having an xpen zip tied to the sides of the 2 level cage (finally got it right!). He has the entire living room and kitchen to run around in when we are home. Now if I can only figure out a way to keep him from going under my recliner! I currently have a small pet fence blocking the back of it (looks tacky, but it keeps him out)

Sophie and Gretel started out in a 3 level cube cage. They would find a way to get out in the middle of the night anyway so we just left the cage open so they could go in and out as they pleased. Then I got rid of the cage and had a just a little pen made of cubes in case I needed to close them in. Now they just have 2 big litter boxes and no actual cage. They stay out of trouble though, they are awesome bunnies.

My little guy is in the bedroom, blocked off with a baby gate so the other bunnies can’t get in there. He started out in a 2 level cube cage but he rattle the cage all night and woke us up all the time, so we left the door open for him too. Now he just has the pen style cage that I had for my girls. So he has free range of my bedroom while the girls are in the kitchen and living room….which isn’t very big, haha.

Powder started out in a x-pen setup, but he is cage phobic – I think it’s from spending way too long in little tiny cages (he was in who knows what then dumped at the humane society and spent a year in their tiny metal floor cages with practically no human interaction cause he was considered “unadoptable”). So, within the first week he was free range, because he worried me to the point I thought he would break his back with how frantic he got anytime the cage closed on him (he jumped into the cover one time and landed square on his back, hard). He was free range til we go Stickers…

Stickers started out in the tiny pet store cage we rescued her in, she spent one night in that while I bunny proofed the laundry room for her. Her foster mom had no idea about bunnies and had her in that, with pine shavings and feeding her walmart pellets with junk in it and alfalfa hay. So after the first day she moved to being free range of one room. I had to keep her secured to one room cause of Powder having the rest of the house.

Once they bonded, they moved into our spare bedroom. Stickers is Ms. Destructo and can’t be trusted without supervision unless the place is super-duper bunny proofed with absolutely nothing to chew that isn’t behind a thick door that can’t be pushed, pulled, or knocked over. Powder loves her and won’t leave her to enjoy some freedom elsewhere. When I am awake, they get to run between their room and my computer room (which has so many baby gates in it it looks like a cage more than a room lol ). I can’t afford to bunny proof the rest of the house to the point she requires it, would take reflooring the house (she eats carpet, any carpet, anywhere) and gating off all the corners and walls. I’m hoping as she gets older she’ll calm down, she’s still quite young.

Awww, I’m also jealous of everyone with free-roam buns!

All three of mine started out in the XL store bought pens until I came on here and realized they weren’t suitable for bunny living. When all three were spayed/neutered, we built a 3 level bunny condo that they have lived in ever since! I would LOVE to free-roam my three but they are all so hyper and get into EVERYTHING and still find ways to destroy things in their bunny proofed part of the room. I don’t dare leave ANY of them alone at allllll.

I have a rabbit room where my 3 seniors reside – Toffee has free run of the room, Bogie is in an x-pen in the room and Peppermint as a 3 story Leith Petwerk Condo.

Bobby has free run of the whole house except for the Senior Rabbit Room.

Peppy used to live in one of those pet store cages before came into my care at about 6 months. After that, she was housed for a while in a homemade 2’x4′ enclosure, then a 3x2x3 storage cube condo, then an expen, and now she’s free-roam. Wow, I never thought about it before, but she’s really been through it all haha.

They have a condo, x-pen, and free roam when I’m home. One is a destructo bunny so I’m busy cleaning after.

Foo has an XL dog cage, but she is only ever in it over night or if we are at work. She will chew on cords if she finds them so we dont quote trust her yet. When we are home, she is free range and had unlimited acess to our space for 8+ hours a day. I second what Chacha said about people being amazed about potty habbits. I always get weird looks when I tell people Foo is out and about and goes to her home if she has to use her potty.

Well when we first got bunnies, they lived in *coughcough* hutches in my room. When we got Joshua we knew he needed more freedom so we got him a x-pen. During Toshi and Paige’s bonding Joshua was uncaged in my room because we needed to use the x-pen to make a neutral space. Joshua was so good loose in my room and Toshi and Paige loved their x-pen that they have stayed like that since

Nala and Duchess currently are in a three level cage that was originally for cats to play in (link to where I got it) that I modified big time, the shelves were no good for two rabbits, I still have the original shelves, but there’s one just so they can get to the top level, but I put the two other plastic ones that came with it with extra support and I am still in the process of modifying it with wooden shelves, and they have a pen around it for them to hop around during the day, and normally I have them out in the living room/kitchen for about 5 hours at night and when I go to sleep I lock them in the cage due to my mom freaking out that they’re gonna escape and get into something they shouldn’t. It’s good enough for them until I’m able to move out and give them a bigger space. That’s the biggest thing I could find in my price range at the time. It’s way bigger than what they had at the shelter, so they’re very happy to have that space. I’ll have to take a photo one I finish modifying it.

my first bunny, cosie (rip) had an xpen with her stuff in it, but had free roam of my room 24/7. callie is not at all trustworthy (!) so she lives in an x pen with half a second level added to it. i’m hoping as callie ages she chills a bit so she can have free roam of my room too.

Both my bunnies live in my bedroom. My one bun lives in a nic cube cage I built and my disabled bunny lives in a store bought cage which has worked out very well for him.

My bunny boy came to me in a 3 X 2 plastic bottomed critter cage. He is now in a 5X3 open xpen in my living room, and is free to roam as he pleases. Though he usually hangs out in his cardboard box hut while coming out for occasional lovin’. At night we just attach the cage as an extension. So he’s confined but he’s not just in the cage.

Mine have a 4’x2′ pet store cage connected to an xpen, inside their own room. They get the run of the room when we’re home, but I just don’t trust Hannah when we’re gone all day at work, or at night, so they get closed up. I do love having the pet store cage to keep the litter boxes in, as they get so much hay everywhere (and sometimes Hannah chooses to pee where she has put the hay, instead of in the boxes) and it’s easy to clean up. The rest of their area is covered in cheap area rugs.

Hannah came with a small pet store cage (I think it’s 1.5’x3′) and she absolutely hates to be locked up. We only take their xpen for travel and I can tell she goes a little stir crazy in there. Otto has always had the same set up they have now.

I wish I could bond them all but I have some stubborn bunnies LOL. Lets see for others, Blue and Baby share a Nic Condo that is 5 foot long 4 feet wide and 8 feet tall with three levels. Raven and Cinnamon have a 3 foot long 2 foot wide 6 foot tall 3 level Nic Condo. Hazel has a 4 foot by 3 foot 2 level Nic Cage. and so does Chipmunk. and last but not least Mr. Hopper and Nibbles have a 4 level Nic condo that is 4 foot long and 3 foot wide. and they all have turns running free in the family room.

Why are pet store cages bad for rabbits? Also, how did you get your rabbits to be so trained? How did you get them to be free range?

                                                          Hey naughtybunny,
Im not lovechacha, but i can give you some input! Ok, pet store cages are bad because there simply is not enough room for your bunny as they grow. The bun can hardly do 2-3 hops before hitting a cage wall. NIC condos, Xpens, and custom built cages are often the best way to go! Free range is probably the best option, if you have the right bunny for it, and you can bunny proof everywhere! Rabbits can be trained very easily, clicker training and reward re-inforced training are very effective! Some bunnies simply cannot resist a tasty looking electrical cord, so that’s why we have to block them off. You can attempt many different things for carpet chewing – natural, safe deterrents, putting blocks of wood there or phone books ect.

Your bun can be free range, if they are not really interested in carpet chewing, are neutered/spayed, are litter trained and the area is bunny proofed!
                                                          Good luck!

Finn started out in a small petstore cage which I left at the store when I adopted him. He then went into a larger petstore cage with an attached x pen for the day, locked in the cage for the night. Once we got the hang of litter training he was allowed in the xpen/cage day and night. We’ve recently gotten rid of his cage and just keep him in an x-pen at night and free range during the day if we’re home/going on short errands. He’s a really good bun and hasn’t chewed on carpet/cords/etc. recently since it’s all “old” and unexciting to him. Once we can curb his dominance pooping in the cat’s boxes and laundry room he’ll go full free range
