        Anyone reading anything good?

I’ve started “The Age of Miracles” by Karen Thompson Walker for a book club I’ve joined – so far, it’s very very good.

Also been trying to get through “Secrets of a Lady” by Tracy Grant – I know the title is a bit ridiculous sounding – it’s pretty good – not a can’t put down book though.

Yay! Sarita, I’ve been waiting for you to make this thread again because for once I can finally say I’m reading stuff that’s not academic!!
Since it’s Holiday Break, I decided that on top of my academic reading, I really wanted to read some novels. So here’s my list of stuff I’ve read and re-read so far.

          American Gods by Neil Gaimen.–Phenomenal.

Looking for Alaska by John Green–one of my favorite authors and favorite humans, this is his first book and my personal favorite. It’s considered “young adult” fiction but I think it works for any age

Neverwhere by Neil Gaimen — a really interesting read, very fantastical with angels, monsters, ect. Typical Gaimen

Divergent by Veronica Roth– one of the newest post-apocalyptic dystopia series following in the wake of Hunger Games. A very interesting set up and world, I recommend it if you liked Hunger Games

Paper Town by John Green — my love for Mr. Green is pretty eternal as you’ll notice from this list of books. This one takes a lot of thinking but there are days when I just sit and think about it because it was really complex.

Stardust by Neil Gamein. If you’ve seen the movie, then you should read this. It’s different than the movie, but it was good, sort of cutesy.

Uglies by Scott Westerfield– another of the post-apocaylptic dystopian series. A horrifying world (people are made pretty at the age of 16 but before then they are sequestered outside of town because they are “ugly”)

An Abundance of Katherine’s by John Green — maybe his weakest work, but still funny in some places.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green — READ THIS BOOK. That’s all I will say about that.

I have a few more books to get through before school stars back up in a week and a half, but I’m a very fast reader.

I’ve got quite a few Neil Gamein’s I need to read as well – I have a friend who is a huge fan of his so I bought all those books that you have mentioned and I do want to read them – good to know that you like them as well – more incentive to get those out to read.

I’ve never heard of John Green – but it looks like I can add samples of his works to my Nook to remind me to buy them when I’m ready so I will do that!

My boyfriend is not much of a reader and sometimes I am a bit shocked by his lack of general knowledge, so I read to him in the evenings before he falls asleep.

At the moment it is Stephen King “The eyes of the dragon”, and once finished, we are going on board with historical books.
I like to read “Do androids dream of electric sheep” as well to him. It is an ooold book, and I have read it tons of times when I was a teenager.

Forgot I’m also reading “The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake” by Aimee Bender – weird book title but good read.

That android book sounds interesting Karla.

It is easily read, so even if you don’t like it, you won’t feel that you have lost valuable hours of your life  I really like it though. Apparently, it was the inspiration for Blade Runner (which I have never seen).

@CinnabunMom, I LOVVEEEE John Green as well!! A friend of mine just turned me onto him and I fell instantly in love. I agree, his work falls under YA, but it definitely translates to all ages. and I full heartedly agree with your comment about “The Fault in our Stars”. I was in the fetal position sobbing my face off by the end, but I feel its something everyone should read.

I’m just finishing up “Casual Vacancy” by JK Rowling, and I’m enjoying it quite a bit, but it’s no Harry Potter

I just joined a Jane Austen book club with some work friends and I’m REALLY excited! I’ve only read “Pride and Prejudice”, “Sense and Sensibility”, and the beginning of “Mansfield Park”. So it will be nice to have the push to finish her works. I have to hurry up and finish “Casual Vacancy”, so I can get started on “Northhanger Abbey” , this months book. After Austen, we will move onto the Bronte sisters, if everyone is still wanting to do it. I’m UBER excited for that part… I have a minor obsession with Jane Eyre…. so much so that I named my cat Bronte… haha

I listen to audiobooks at work all the time as well, I’m about halfway through “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. A friend recommended this author to me, and I really enjoyed his other book “I Am Messenger”, and this one is definitely living up to all the hype. It also falls under YA, but it’s another one of those than anyone can relate to.

I’m currently finishing up “Vanity Fair” by Thackeray – only 20 pages to go. I’ve really enjoyed it. 19th century Brit lit is kind of a hobby of mine.

Next I’m deciding between a couple books, and one is the fifth “Game of Thrones” series book, “Dance with Dragons”. I liked the first few, but really wasn’t impressed with the fourth, so we’ll see how it goes. I wasn’t sure I would even get the fifth book, but I got it for Christmas so I might as well read it. His books are readable and interesting at least, even if they’re not always great.

My other choice is Temple Grandin’s “Animals Make us Human”. I really liked her book “Animals in Translation” so I’m excited to read this one.

@CinnabunMom, John Green sounds interesting. I read some of the Amazon reviews on his books and they might be something I’d like.

@Malp, I love the idea of an Austen book club! I’ve read all of her books (and seen the BBC adaptations, haha). Some of my favorites. I never did get into the Brontes though – I couldn’t connect with Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre the same way as with Austen’s books.

I’m reading my fave author, Philippa Gregory “Lady of the Rivers”. I love her, it’s so hard to put the books down, I get through them pretty fast. Also reading a huge non-fiction book about The Borgias, simply called “The Borgias”.

I got 5 books for Christmas and my “To Read” pile is just insane now. Over 40 books in it.

I feel so close-minded when it comes to books. Most of the authors you guys are discussing, I’ve never heard of. I tend to stick to historical fiction. When I read something else, it’s just weird. I never read books set in the present.

                            I love NEIL GAIMAN

Have you read Anansi Boys? Awesome book!

uglies was a great book….Pretties in the series really made you wonder about L.A.

And I think Paper Town was a on a top reading list for teens (by I think ALA)

LPT, Would you consider alternate history fiction….I found a bunch of interesting looking ones….If the South had won the Civil war and if the Japanese hadn’t surrendered after the bombings….I haven’t started them yet, but they look awesome!

I just got a Kindle for Xmas. My sister recommended Chop Chop…It’s free on amazon for Kindle..

There is a book called if I stay by Gayle Forman which is about a girl in a coma after an accident that killed most of her family…I think at the end she is going to choose to live because there is a sequel…lol

I could pee on this and other poems by cats….another book I’ve started. And how to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you…

Unspoken is a YA book that I read a couple years ago….a bit of an apocalyptic dystopia where 5 kids in a cult are literally killed by their biggest fear.
Invisible -Also Ya (but might be more of a teen book) I read a couple years ago…there is a really cool twist at the end…LOVED IT

Mr. Was- Teen goes back in time to change the present…and gets mixed up in his families past…

there is also the Peirs Anthony On a pale horse (Incarnations of immortality series) That one is about a man who becomes death…
The future of US- Must read (IMHO) They find their FB (Ten years before Facebook was invented) and then they try to change everything….and mess it all up….

Neal Shusterman has some really good novels… Unwind then Unwholly and Unstrung
And he also wrote the dark side of nowhere and full tilt…

I used to work in a library so I get a little excited about books… I miss the smell of libraries though….

Pretties was just delivered to me from my library so I’ll be starting that this weekend!! Excited for that.
I wanna read more Gaiman too. I’ve got some more coming, but sadly break is ending soon and that means my fun reading is about to go out the window.

Elrowhen: 4th book of ASoIaF is the worst one, in my opinion. GRRM took a huge risk by breaking up the narrative the way he did, but 5 was good enough to make it worth the AGONIZING 6 YEAR WAIT. *she said not at all bitterly* i just want some news on book 6. If he makes me wait another 6 years….

Malp: Love Austen. And the Bronte’s. My all time favorite book is Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre is on my top 10 list. And the “fetal position” you describe at the end of The Fault in Our Stars….accurate.

Uglies was such a good series. Have you read his other books? So Yesterday, though the oddest is one of my favorites, but I really like Peeps.

Right now I’m reading Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, it’s a very sad book at times, but I’ve learned so much from it and I’m only on chapter three

I bought a book called “Parrotfish” on the first, finished the thing not 2 hours later…. So now I’m looking for a new book to read, I was thinking about getting some books from a used book store in Greensburg, but I have no way to get there until we go to the pet store to get thing for the pets.

I’ve been reading the same book for the past month, Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town. When I was ordering textbooks, Amazon recommended it to me. It’s about the meth epidemic in middle America. It’s actually pretty interesting, I just have little to no time to read for fun.

I mostly read 19th century Brit lit, or early/mid-20th century American or British literature. Basically, the classics. I also read some non-fiction and a tiny bit of fantasy (Tolkien, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones is pretty much it). I can’t remember the last time I read a book set in the present. Haha
