I have been doing research and I was thinking about spaying my rabbit. Since it’s after Christmas I have plenty of money to cover the cost. My rabbit is 3 yrs old, yes, I know, I should have done this earlier, but I never had the need to. I don’t have two rabbits, she’s been super easy to litter train, and she’s not that aggressive. But I would like to extend and improve my bun’s life. Is it too late to even think about it?

It’s absolutely not too late! I would just recommend doing bloodwork prior to the procedure.

How long and hard is the recovery?

Recovery really isnt bad at all! Make sure you find a reliable vet that works with rabbits and knows what they are doing. I brought Elvira in at 8am, she was done by 10:30 am and we were home by 11 am! The first day she was really tired and out of it. She ate a little bit, but not a lot. She spent most of the day laying on her side. Make sure they give you pain medicine (pretty easy to give because it tastes good to them!). The next morning she was still acting a little lethargic, but eating more. By that night she was pretty much back to normal and definitely by the 3rd day she was totally fine! Its really not so bad

So if I had blood work done and the surgery what is the possible range for the price? (I live in a rural area so it’s not like big city price)

It’s so difficult to answer this question – do you have a vet you see now for her? If so I would call them directly and ask them, that is truly the best way to know as prices just seem to be so different based on so many factors.

I haven’t ever taken her but it is my dog’s and cats vet. Also another thing I was concerned about is handling. I have tried since day 1 and she still absolutely hates being handled. Petting and brushing is about as far as it gets.

Prices definitely vary. I would contact the closest House Rabbit Society and see if they can recommend a good vet to you! Dont worry about handling — mine dont like being held either, so I just lure them into the cat carrier with pellets haha.

You guys have been so helpful thanks! But 1 last question. Haha. Is blood work expensive?

We can’t really answer questions on prices. They are too specific to your region, and to your individual vet. The best thing would be to take her into the vet for a check-up. You will need an appointment before she is spayed anyways. Ask the vet there about what he/she recommends in terms of blood work, etc… And then they can give you a procedure cost estimate. One thing tho, make sure that she will be given pain meds to take at home. Vets will usually give a long-term pain med injection, but you’ll need something for the couple days afterwards also.

When you call to make your check-up appointment, make sure you mention that you are interested in having your female rabbit spayed and would like to have her seen by the vet before scheduling the surgery. Double-check that your vet DOES spay FEMALE rabbits! Some cat/dog vets will “see” rabbits, but don’t spay or neuter them. Make sure that the vet is able to spay her before scheduling an appointment! If not, you’ll need to find a different vet.

I have found two trusted vets about 50 minutes away through the House Rabbit Society and I will try to contact them soon. I’m sure my parents wouldn’t mind helping a little on the cost since it’s helping my rabbit. Thank you all so much for your help and tips! It really did help!
