My rabbit’s cage has a bottom on it were she walks on the cage and the litter is underneath. Is it better for her to walk on the liter, or does it matter that she has to walk on the metal cage? She spends at least four hours outside of her cage a day, but usually more than that. It has a removable bottom so she can walk on the litter if that’s better, but it wouldn’t seem like she’d like walking on her poop.

This is the cage, you can see the bottom piece I’m talking about:

          cute bunny!

wire isn’t good for bunny feet. can you remove the wire flooring and put a litter box on the bottom? that way she’s not walking on wire or in dirty litter.

also, how big is the cage? bigger is always better! lots of people here have dog exercise pens or cages made of NIC cubes. you can check out the habitat section for ideas.

That type of floor can cause sore hocks which are nasty sores on a rabbit’s foot. Depending on what kind of litter you use it may not be comfortable to lay on. You could just put towels or hay down as bedding

What a cute little girl! I encourage you to explore other cage options that have a solid floor. Imagine walking on a wire grate all day…not very comfortable! If you’re open to changing up her cage, there are many options that allow her to have plenty of space while being easy to clean. I see a litter box in the corner…is she litter trained in her cage?

What kind of flooring is underneath the metal? If it’s plastic you really won’t need anything down. Litter or bedding. My buns love laying on the plastic and their litter boxes are full of CareFresh if they want to get off the plastic. Or they just hop to one of the other levels which are carpeted. If it’s plastic I’d just take the wire bottom out and put a towel on the plastic for her to lay on if she prefers.
