        Hi,

I just received a mini lop on December 20th as a Christmas present from my boyfriend. I registered on here today to learn as much as I can about him. I’m feeding him as much Timothy hay and a little alfalfa hay and as much pellets as he wants… I haven’t started to introduce veggies and fruit yet. What’s the best diet for a 3 month bunny? I notice him really gaining weight lately… Not sure if I should be limiting his pellets? I read online that babies can eat unlimited hay and pellets but I’m not sure till what age.
Also… I would love any advice on litter training… I’m already getting tired of the clean ups.
        Thanks,
        Lindsay

Welcome to BinkyBunny ! (: I hope your’re loving your bunny, they’re super lovable xo
I got my bunny when she was 3 months aswell , aha , I recommend using Newspaper bedding and never pine or cedar bedding ( if you keep him in a cage *) . I gave my bunny unlimited alfalfa based pellets ( nothing with fruit or nut in it though! ) and unlimited timothy hay.. I didn’t know about alfalfa hay back then, -.- . my bunny is actually pretty small now, and she’s 10 months but maybe that’s her breed . I wouldn’t recommend giving him veggies now.. he might have tummy problems. I would give veggies at around 5 months or something, that’s when I started to give my bunny remember if you do give him veggies don’t give him iceberg!

Make sure to give her floor time for at least hours
          always keep hay available
          bunnies hate being held, lol
cut him, groom him, * Monthly Maintenance on Binky Bunny info***

and that’s all I can think of (:

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new bunny .

Since you’re new to bunny ownership, I encourage you to click the “BUNNY INFO” link on the menu near the top of the page – it has a ton of great information regarding your questions on proper diet and litter training as well as pointers on proper housing, playtime, and the importance of spaying/neutering. If you have any more specific questions do let us know!

              Ditto, Peppypoo. Welcome!
There is a list that you can copy (I think it’s in PDF form) of recommended vegetables and fruits that’s a good lifetime guideline. I also urge you to read the Bunny Info. sections that will help you get totally set up and off to a good start as a new bunny owner. Yes, do limit the pellets right away – a quarter cup daily is the max. And unlimited hay is excellent. Also daily fresh water (and in the bottle vs. crock dish debate, I am a crock user. Low sided, heavy ceramic bowl is easy for a young bunny to use.) I could go on with so many tips like that, but you’ll find it all in our different sections of the site.

Any other tips can be read in the forums while browsing the posts. There’s loads of good advice from members, accessible via keyword search or scrolling along, but we just ask that you post new questions as you just did in the right forum, rather than replying to any posts older than a couple of weeks.

You will love having a bunny, and become its “slave” in no time!

Thanks for the info! I have been using the recycled newspaper bedding and giving unlimited hay… My bunny didn’t like the pellets I bought him from the pet store (I made sure they didn’t have nuts and seeds in them). He just liked the pellets from the previous owner… I bought a different kind from bulk barn yesterday and he seems to like that. I’m going to buy some from a feed store next and see if he likes them even more.

The lady I bought the bunny off of said to never feed him alfalfa hay because it kills bunnies. I’ve researched though and a little is okay for bunnies under 1.

When you’re looking at pellets make sure they have at least 18% fiber and have no nuts, seeds,, etc. A good rabbit pellet will only have pellets

Alfalfa hay won’t kill you rabbit if given in small portions. We give it to our’s as a treat sometimes, but it shouldn’t be their sole source of hay.

Your rabbit certainly likes you! Rabbit are prey animals and most will feel like you’re a hawk when you try to pick them up. It’s just a natural reaction and he may become more cuddly with age, just so long as you don’t force it. My youngest rabbit, Toshi (1 year 6 months) truly hates being held and will squirm, bite, and kick when we have to hold him. However he loves to be petted and is very friendly Some rabbits just dislike it.

If they are big hay eaters then they are big poop makers. lol

Alfalfa won’t kill a bunny. It isn’t recommended as a primary hay because it isn’t grass (it’s a legume). It’s high in calcium. It’s also high in protein. It’s good for a growing bunny, but it might make an adult rabbit fat.

Sometimes rabbits just take a liking to certain people and not others. Of course I’m the meanie because I’m the one who has to do all the stuff they hate.

Oh he is for sure a big hay eater! it’s pretty wild… I’ve been comparing him to a horse lol… that’s good to know about the alfalfa hay, because he LOVES it and I bought some so I’d like to still feed him some.

                        Thanks!
