        Hi everyone,

I stumbled across this forum while doing some bunny research, and I’m hoping that you all will be able to offer me some insight.

I have been debating for a few months now about whether or not to get a bunny. I really want a Holland Lop. I had a few bunnies growing up, and the lops are my favorite. I’m just not sure if I’m ready for the commitment of owning a bunny, and am still really just in the researching phase. I have spoken to a few local ARBA breeders, and they are all probably annoyed that I can’t make up my mind

I’m not looking to get into showing, just interested in a pet at this time. I’m just not sure how high maintenance a house rabbit is, how much the food/bedding costs, if I’ll ever be able to go on vacation again if I get a bunny, etc.

How much attention do bunnies require? Do they stink? Are they noisy at night? (we had a hampster for a while and ended up rehoming it because it kept us up all night)

Any input that any of you experience bunny owners can offer will be greatly appreciated! I want to thoroughly think this through and not make a decision on impulse by falling for those adorable floppy ears and wiggling noses.

Thanks so much in advance for anything you might be able to contribute

I’m really happy you’re taking the time to research bunnies this much! Shows you really want to give a bun a good home if you decide to take on the responsibility. As a semi-new bunny owner (I got my first one last April) I can definitely tell you I didn’t not expect any of this. Most people see rabbits a lot like guinea pigs which is not the case at all.

A few of the things I didn’t expect as a new bunny owner:

          – You absolutely WILL NOT be able to house a rabbit in only one of those tiny pet store rabbit cages. They’re okay while you’re learning and getting everything set up short-term but definitely not okay long-term. So you will have to think about space and deciding whether you want your new fur baby to be free-range or have a home in which case you will need to build a bunny condo/house or purchase an x-pen in which they can live comfortably. If you go the route of not free-range you need to be prepared to let your bun have some run time during the day so they can get out, stretch their legs, and have fun!

          – Your rabbit should ALWAYS be spayed or neutered. For females, it’s almost a total must. They have a very high percentage rate of developing uterine cancer if not spayed which will be stressful and expensive for both of you. For both females and males it will also help eliminate most bad bunny behaviors such as bad litter training and what I call the terrible two (teenage) bun stage. So be prepared if getting a young or unspayed/neutered bunny.

          – Rabbit do not stink and are VERY good at keeping themselves clean. The only odor they do let off is obviously their litter box… ummm, contents. But theres lots of litters that are very good at absorbing and masking the smell. (Warning: Unspayed or Unneutered bunnies also have a quite pungent urine smell but that goes away once desexed.) I personally use and LOVE CareFresh. It’s about $27 for a large bag but between my three bunnies we go through a bag every two weeks. PetCo has a very good option on-line where you can purchase the CareFresh in an order of 3 for only $16 a bag which saves you quite a bit! Litter boxes also depend on the rabbit. Some rabbits are very picky about keeping clean litter boxes in which case you’ll need to clean daily which isn’t a big deal if you don’t want odor anyways (ours are odorless even with 3) and some buns don’t mind in which case I know a lot of people do it every other day or sometimes three. As you mentioned bedding, I’ll add that you really don’t need to buy bedding for the bun. Just litter. My bunnies have a few towels that they like to throw around but other than that they just lay on the plastic flooring. They prefer it a lot of days.

          – As for noise — everybun is different. Some are vocal, some are not. Out of all my three, rarely does even a peep come out of them. And most of the noises bunnies do make are pretty subtle. The only noise that comes from my buns is their cage when they all get riled up and wanna come out and play or if they have a loud toy that they can’t stop playing with. But usually if ignored, they stop after 5 minutes. Rabbits tend to have set hours for sleeping also and usually are very docile and quiet during the day and have an hour or two in the morning and at night that they are really energetic. This theory has proved quite true even with my buns who are from a very hyper breed.

          – Cost of food greatly depends on your rabbit, his weight, and age. When under the age of 6 months they should be on unlimited pellets, unlimited hay, and unlimited water. At about 12 weeks of age you can begin introducing veggies into their diet but thats dependent on you and what you decide to give them. Eventually you will want to get them to about 2 cups of veggies per day per 6 lbs of rabbit. My vet isn’t huge on the importance of veggies so we give ours a little less but it really depends on the diet you wish to have your bun on. Some buns are completely pellet-free and have an all vegetable diet but this is something that needs to be oversaw by an experienced, rabbit-savvy vet so you can ensure your bun is getting all the essentials he needs daily. At about 5 months, you can begin switching them over from Young Rabbit food to Adult Food and at 6 months begin lowering the amount to about 1/4 cup of pellets per 4 lbs of rabbit. I know a lot of people on here also feed more veggies with 1/8 cup of pellets per day. Throughout their life they need unlimited hay and obviously unlimited water. A big bag of Oxbow pellets costs us about $10 and with even three bunnies lasts a little less than a month but if you’re looking at a baby you’ll have to add in money for extra pellets since they need them to grow.

          – Vacations: My boyfriend and I decided to go on a week-long vacation after getting all three. We thought about bringing them along but taking three bunnies on the plane was virtually impossible and we ended up having my boss’s wife come in and check on them and give them time out to play every day while we were gone. We left a list of phone numbers and any questions she may have with the buns and a gift card for watching them. This Christmas, we also had to travel 5 hours away to my families home so THIS time we just packed the little rascals up and brought them with us. Now, a few times is okay and I know a few people on here switch their bunnies up with them quite a bit while at school and whatnot but you will also need to think about your bun and how much he stresses. My buns were stressed the whole car-ride but once we got them back in a pen with their favorites they were right back to normal but having a bunny is like having any animal — you will have to think of his feelings as well as your own.

On the bright side, one thing I did not expect? How much personality, love, and just absolute joy these little (and big) creatures can and will give you. I never expected my first bun to have so much personality or love. It’s a really amazing experience having my three little brats and I wouldn’t give them up for the world. All three have completely different personalities and they are all amazing. When I’m upset, my buns can tell. One will even always come into my lap and put his paws on my shoulder and lick my face whenever I’m upset. While the others will crowd around and just lay with me. They are extraordinary little creatures and if you decide to get one I’m sure you’ll be happy with your new little fur-baby!

Also, I noticed you said you were talking to breeders. You can also have the option of looking at rescues. The good things about rescues: They will already come spayed or neutered. Usually the rescue can give you an idea of their personalities and what you can expect from each rabbit. You can come in and meet and play with every rabbit until you find one that you think fits you and your home perfectly. And of course, you’ll be giving a great home to a bunny in need of one!!

Hope this helped, if you have any more questions feel free to ask!

Thought of a few other details:

Vet visits will be needed about once a year although in the US vaccinations are not necessary. I know in some other countries such as the UK vaccinations are required so I’d look into those also if you’re not from the US.

And toys! Buns need lots to occupy their minds. Thankfully, it’s really simple AND easy to make loads of bun toys from a ton of every day things you’d have at your house anyways such as toilet paper rolls and phone books!

Thought I’d add that in since I’m not sure how much you’ve read up on them.

ditto everything tanlover said. that’s very valuable info.

i just want to throw in the importance of rabbit proofing. even if your bunny is going to live in an xpen or whatever else you decide to house him in, he will still need plenty of playtime outide of his house. rabbits LOVE chewing on rugs, wires, and baseboards. just when you think you’re completely rabbit proof they manage to outsmart you!! you can look in the bunny info section about rabbit proofing ideas.

rabbits are fabulous little creatures, but keep in mind each rabbit has a very different personality. for example, some loved to be cuddled, and some hate to be touched or picked up. in time you will learn your bunny’s likes and dislikes and develop a bond on both of your terms!

they are not “easy” pets to be caged and forgotten about. rabbits are by nature very social creatures.

if you decide to get a bunny, your research will do you well and will make you a wonderful bunny mommy!

Can’t really add much as tanlover’s post has so much great info! However I thought I’d post about the noises bunnies do make and shelters.

Most bunnies do not make that much noise, but some do. One of my rabbits, Joshua, squeaks, growls, and grunts. His squeaks come when he is eating vegetables, his growls when we’re bothering him, and his grunts when he is excited or mad. He use to only make noises when he was mad (he came from a neglectful home), but sometimes he binkies up to us, grunting. He also is a very noisy eater; smacks his lips, grunts, squeaks, etc. It’s not annoying though, just cute-he’s like someone who is always muttering to themselves.

As tanlover said, shelters are a very good place to get a rabbit. They will certainly not be annoyed that you’re taking your time, as they do not want to adopt to someone who is buying pets without thinking. Adopting from a sheler is also much cheaper: most shelters neuter their rabbits, litter box train them, and some even give a free vet check up. In the UK they’ll come with vaccines too. Not to mention that you can adopt an already bonded pair from shelters, most bunnies are much happier with a friend, and adopting a bonded pair saves you time and gives home to two rabbits! Shelters will be happy to answer any questions and make sure you are matched up with the right rabbit.

My rabbits can get a little noisy at night. Leopold has this thing where he lifts one side of the litter pan up and then lets it drop. I think that’s what you meant by noisy since you mentioned a hamster.

Wow, great information from everyone above! I’m really glad you’re taking time to research before adding a new pet to the family . In addition to everything above, I just wanted to point out that a well cared-for bunny can live to be 10 years old, and once in a while even older than that! So do keep in mind changes in your life that might occur in the future (moving, school, other pets) when considering whether or not a bunny is right for you.

It’s good to hear that you are researching the needs of a life with a bunny. So many get one on impulse, or receive a gift, only to end up populating their local shelters when it gets to be too much for them.
Tanlover gave you some excellent info.
I will also suggest that you either scroll up, or go to the BB home page and read the sections under Bunny Info. One of them is how to calculate the costs of a bunny, others deal with habitats, monthly maintenance, bunny proofing your home, etc. BB has put in years of research and we try to keep our info. updated, so you can really get a sense of the details of what’s involved just by reading what’s provided here. You can also do keyword searches in the Forums for things like “vacation” to read questions from other members that were answered with loads of advice. I only mention that we don’t allow replies to posts older than a couple of weeks, ie. they become ‘Read-Only” (though not usually locked) for research but no new responses.

If you go ahead, expect a life of slavery to someone small and adorable for the next 8-12 years!

Not much to add but I thought I’d throw in my two cents about food costs: one of the best things you can do is buy in bulk. If you’re near farmland or a farm, you can see if the owner will let you buy bales of hay for super cheap. Or, if you’re in a place where this isn’t an option, I would really recommend buying online in bulk. I have a lop rabbit and I buy one 5lb box of American Pet Diner “Timothy Gold” from Doctors Foster and Smith website (a really fantastic website for small pet toys/food/liter boxes/ect). It costs me about 13.00 (not including S and H which is about 4 dollars) and it lasts my Cinnabun a little over a month. It really cuts down on food costs. For example: before I started doing this, I was buying one bag of Timothy Hay from a pet store EVERY WEEK. And it was about 8/week which was running me about 28-30 dollars a month. Now I spend maybe 16 on hay for a month. Big difference.
Let us know if you have any other questions!

I’m not sure if you’ve stumbled upon the House Rabbit Society (HRS) in our research, but definitely check out that site as well! They are at rabbit.org. They have excellent articles on virtually every topic.

You can also peruse past threads on Binkybunny and see what some of the issues are that come up from time to time.

Thank you all so much for your responses! You have given me a lot to think about, and I definitely have more research to do.

I have decided to hold off on getting a bunny for now, because my husband and I are expecting a baby in July. We will re-evaluate after we settle into a new routine and see if I still think I want a bunny.

I think eventually we will probably get one, because I’ve always liked them and keep going back to the idea of getting one-but I don’t think now is the right time.

Thank you also for the suggestions about the shelter/rescue bunnies. I will definitely look more into that when the time comes. There don’t seem to be too many bunny rescues in my area, and most of them don’t want to adopt to people with children, so I’m not sure how that will work. But we will see when the time comes.

Thanks again for all your help!

                                  Oh I am so tempted!

There is a 2 1/2 year old neutered lop on craigslist about an hour from me that needs a new home.

The owners have an aggresive hunting dog and want to rehome the bunny as he is not safe to roam anymore. She’s including the cage/xpen/food/litter/ supplies for half the cost of the adoption fee of a bunny at a shelter. oh why do I do this to myself?!

Craigslist can really be tempting, right?? When the time comes though, I’m sure you’ll make the right decision. And if you do decide on a bunny, there are always great bunnies needing good homes, and although adopting from a shelter may cost more, it really helps out with the work that they do .

It’s not always bad.. as long as you decide thats what you want! You obviously have taken the time to research this decision so even if you do decide to get one earlier than expected I have to say, I won’t object!

Well the woman has someone local coming to look at Skittles tomorrow. If she doesn’t take him, she will let me know.
She works until 5:30 and it’s just not feasible for me to load up the kids and have them in the car for 2 hours in the evening, and I don’t feel comfortable going that far to a stranger’s house alone. Oh well.

Don’t get wrong, I fully support what shelters do, I am glad they do what they do and I understand why they charge. It just would have been nice to get a neutered bunny with supplies for half the price of a neutered shelter bunny that I will have to buy all the supplies for.

Oh. My. Goodness. What a total lovebug!!! He is just a total gorgeous little guy!!!! One thing I’ll comment on — if you do get him… I would suggest giving him something bigger to get the hay out of! That hay container doesn’t look like it would last very long and he should have unlimited hay. Most people just fill the litter box with litter and then put hay on top, off to one side on the litter, or hook a hay holder right above the litter box so the hay mess just falls inside when he’s yanking it out! Just a small comment in case you DO end up with this gorgeous furball!

Bunnies also love to dine while going in their boxes…nothing like the sight of a bun, thoughtful look on his face as he burrows into a pile of hay in his litterbox (since the best hay is *always* on the bottom!) and, er, “goes”.

Wow.. you have received great information!! (Tanlover–awesome!) Anyway, I can see why that bunny would be tempting, and I understand that having him already neutered and he comes with supplies can be even that more tempting. It’s just that that cage he comes with is too small, so you would still have to buy a pen to attach to that cage or build something else. The cage would be be okay though for a home base if you had an xpen attached to it. Check out the habitats section under the Bunny Info menu on this site to get an idea of what cage sizes are ideal. There is also the “Cost” page under bunny info that will give you some idea of ongoing costs.

I wish more people were like you and really took the time to research and check things out prior. (Though we have some amazing members who have learned very well a long the way). But if you are planning on having a baby soon, maybe it would be something to consider after you see how much time you have left. after you have the baby. I volunteered for shelters and rescues for many years and it was not uncommon for rabbit to be given up after a baby was born. Now of course this was coupled with unrealistic expectations of what rabbit care entailed in the first place and you are clearly researching beforehand so that speaks volumes. It’s just something to keep in mind.

BB- the current owner is sending an xpen along with the bunny and his current cage. I also have an XL dog crate, and another xpen here if we need it.

Well I got an email this morning from the owner saying that she had thought it over and she’d like for us to take him! She really wants him to go to home with kids and she loves the fact that I am a stay at home so he’ll get lots of attention.
After a long talk with my husband to be sure that he is on board, we have decided to jump in and go for it. We are meeting her this evening to pick him up! I am excited

Congrats on deciding to get this guy! It sounds like you already have kids, so this baby isn’t the first. That should help, you know what to expect by this point! This also gives you several months to get a good routine down for cleaning, feeding, etc… Very exciting!

                                                            Thanks all!

We picked up Mr. Skittles last night and he is settling in nicely.
he was an angel in hjs carrier on the way home, and when i put him in his cage he hopped right into his litterbox and did his business.
That cage is actually a lot bigger than it looked in the pics! It barely fit in the back of my van.
We’re going to have to make some diet changes though, it looks like she was feeding him the “junk food” pellets from Walmart and the like. He is quite a chubby bun!
So if anybody has any tips for transitioning pellets I would appreciate that. I hate to waste the food as it is an almost full bag, but I don’t want to give it to him if it’s bad for him.

Will try to get some pics up soon. He’s not really interesting yet. I am currently sitting in the xpen with him and he’s just sitting in his litterbox. I’ll snap some when he decides to hop around

You’ll need the old food to transition him:

Week 1, give him 75% old, 25% new
Week 2, give him 50% old, 50% new
Week 3, give him 25% old, 75% new
Week 4 and beyond, he will get only the new pellets.

I would recommend picking out the obvious “cereal” pieces and any crunchy, rainbow bits and throwing those out. Try to have the old food be primarily the regular pellets. This is a good project for your kids to help with if they’re old enough. Set them up at the table with the pellets dumped in a big bowl and have them go digging for the rainbow pieces (with clean hands!)

Welcome to BB and congrats on your new bunny! I’m so glad he found a home with you

You have already gotten great advice from everyone. I just wanted to caution you about your kids and the bunny. Make sure you don’t ever leave them alone with him, especially if they are very young. Bunnies are quite fragile. They have to be handled properly and have their behind supported if being picked up, otherwise they can easily break their own back struggling to get away. Also, they are prey animals, so most of them hate being picked up and carried around. Make sure your kids understand and respect that. I know it must be hard for them not to be all over the new bunny

Again, congrats on your little guy, he’s gorgeous!! More pics please!

My little ones didn’t come out of their shell right away either. Sometimes ignoring them while in the x-pen and doing something else can really entice them to come check you out. And when he does come check you out, don’t reach for him or anything. Let him come on his terms. I would also suggest maybe getting some treats (veggies, craisins, ect) and making a line of them from him to you!

They sat in the xpen for about 5 minutes this morning and brushed and petted him, then they got bored of sitting quietly and went off to play.
They won’t ever be left unsupervised with the bunny.

He did eat a little piece of carrot and a sprig of parsley from my hand, but he ddin’t attempt to get out of the box and follow it when I pulled it away.
We’ll just leave him be and let him get comfortable in his new home.

My buns refuse to walk in the kitchen because of the flooring in there also! Hahahaha. It’s really funny to see them almost attempt to do it and then go binkying back across the carpet because they put one paw on it.

Seriously — I love them both SO MUCH and I think they are both really lucky to have found a home that cares. Especially Royal — he was definitely neglected. Keep looking on craigslist — there are some bunnies out there that desperately need good homes! Shelters are great too 😉
