So Valentine tore up the rug I have down for them on the floor.  I am afraid they’ve been actually EATING it!  I don’t see pieces anywhere.  I had to take away the phone book I gave them because they were eating the paper not just tearing it up.  What can I put down instead of carpet that will keep them warm and keep them from slipping and sliding on the floor?  A rug is all I can think of but maybe I can make it so they stop eating it.  I am probably taking Valentine to the vet because she’s been making weird noises, like gagging noises, so I think she may have eating the carpet!

        What can I do?

I have these carpet tiles, the ‘pile’ is so low they can’t chew it up but it’s just like carpet for feel and traction http://www.homedepot.ca/know-how/projects/installing-carpet-tile Also they are rubber backed, so they don’t slide around and if they wee on them it won’t go through to your floor

My vet just told me that the surface I had for Sammy was too smooth, and had added to a problem on the bottom of one foot. She recommended that I use seagrass mattes for flooring. I ordered 6 of the extra large from BB, and though it was a pain to tie them together at the corners with some sissel, it worked really well and her xpen floor is a new series of mattes that look very neat, are certainly warm enough, and if she ever nibbles them, are as healthy as eating hay.

I’ll show you a pix of it. I have been trying floor material every so often for ages, so I am hoping this answer is the best so far. She seems to like it well enough.

Not sure if this will help your situation at all, seagrass mats are definitely awesome for putting down!

As a deterrent for my buns and the carpet (they were doing the same thing), we managed to switch their attention from carpet to normal bath towels. My buns were always munching (and eating) the carpet but having a few towels lying around that they know they can do whatever they want with has really helped our problem tremendously. They LOVE digging, biting, and throwing them around. It may be useful for you also!
