I was just cleaning Sunny’s litterbox and refilling hay racks, and I found a nasty little clump of some creature, my firt thought was mouse, in his hayrack with the rest of the hay he didn’t eat. Of course I took it out, but does this mean the rest of the hay is bad? Do i need to contact the hay people? Or is this very common and the rest of the hay is ok? I hope he didn’t nibble it…i’m afraid to stick my hand down in the hay now.lol…hairy critter clump! Eeewww

Ewwwww ! Are we talking “mortal remains”. Must admit my first instinct would be to dispose of the hay. It probably got caught up in the harvester. Is the hay from a bale or a bag ?

            It came from a bag…

I think I’d let the supplier know as a matter of courtesy, I know most of the companies go to great lengths to keep their processing areas rodent free for just this reason. The rest of the hay is probably safe but if you have another bag handy I would be tempted to get rid of it.. You never know the supplier may give you another one.

These things happen. Where there is hay, there are little critters and creepy crawlies. I wouldn’t be terribly worried. If you contact the company, they will probably let you have a new bag.

Not uncommon for some poor little creature to get caught up in they hay processing out (either out in the field or later in the process), but usually that kind of stuff is shaken out with smaller bags. I would let the hay vendor know and ask for a replacement. I would do that for my customers, plus, I would just want to know! I also personally wouldn’t feed my bunny any hay that a dead animal has been decaying in, so best to just get it replaced. Take photos if you can or keep the bag, just in case the vendor needs it.

That’s great they are sending you a new bag.

I found something gross in my Oxbow hay once. It looked like those stomach pellets that owls cough up. It was like a hard ball full of feathers. Nasty. I threw out the bag and contacted the company but they didn’t offer to replace it.
