Can someone explain to me or list all the different types of bugs rabbits can catch? So far, I know of fleas and mites…

How do I prevent my bunny from catching them?

What are some symptoms I should be looking out for?

Should I be checking her fur and ears on a regular basis?

I’m not just afraid for my bunny, but also for my own health because I’m allergic to mites, fleas, mosquitos… pretty much anything that can bite me. I think it’s their saliva that irritates my body and causes allergic reactions, so this topic is pretty serious for me…

Thank you for your help !!!

The only thing that you can do is to really have any rabbit be a house rabbit. If the household has any other animals, such as cats or dogs, there might be a chance that a rabbit could get fleas or mites from them. So be sure that if you have other any animals in your household to flea treat them.

Do you have an established vet for your rabbit? I would take your bunny for a wellness exam if you have not yet. Here is a link for you to look at for experienced rabbit vets recommended by the House Rabbit Society:

Ditto!! If you bunny is only indoors this means you really have no chance of ending up with parasites. Mites etc can come in on a dog or a cat certainly but it’s unlikely your bunny would be affected unless they associate regularly/share bedding that type of thing.

Like everyone has said, as long as you keep your bunny indoors the chance of catching a parasite is pretty slim. Occasionally bunnies do get parasites at birth from breeders (due to crowding and unsanitary conditions) so if you have a new bunny there is a possibility for things like ear mites. There’s little need to be checking them constantly as long as they are kept indoors, but signs would be inflammation/excessive itching at one spot, or constant scratching of the ears for ear mites.

I agree with the others. Just want to add that a house rabbit actually sounds like a perfect pet for you if you do not have a cat or dog. Once healthy and indoors, your bunny may never get any parasite to worry about. With your condition being as sensitive to them, I think you can get a clear bill of health from your vet and not worry. You probably are more at risk of bug bites walking to your car than getting anything from your bunny. I have (and I don’t want to tempt fate here!) never had a parasite problem with either of my two indoor house bunnies. Enjoy your Lulu!
