My bunny Alfred had to be put to sleep yesterday.  He had a sinus infection, and an obstruction, he developed a cataract, the vet couldn’t say if that was related. He had also ground one of his back teeth so hard it fell out.  i guess he was in a lot of pain. She gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery and that was a rough estimate.  He was in a lot of pain. she relieved some of the gas pressure, but he started going down again, so she figured surgery was the next best option. Today, i just keep replaying my decision, maybe he could’ve bounced back? maybe

this feels terrible. i can’t stop crying. and his brother Seymour is all alone now.  How do i handle this, will he be lonely? i have a stuffed bunny animal and took that out today.

I’m so sorry. You did the right thing. He was in pain and it wouldn’t have been fair to put him through a surgery with poor prognosis. That would have prolonged his suffering. No matter how much we know it’s the right decision, we always feel guilty. My bunny had cancer and I put him down and I feel the same way. There is always guilt but I’m here to reassure you, you did the right thing. It’s your last gift of kindness to a bunny you love.

Make sure to spend as much extra time with Seymour as you can. The stuffed bunny might offer him some comfort (be careful he doesn’t chew it, if he’s not used to a teddy). Monitor his eating/pooping. He will need time to grieve as well.

Thanks. I’m worried about Seymour today. He ate a little of his pellets, but hasn’t pooped or eaten any of his veggies. Hiding out in his little teepee. I put the stuffed bunny next to him and he seems to be snuggling against it. This is brutally sad.

**Hugs** He needs time to grieve. Try to entice him to eat with his favorite foods. If he’s still unwilling to eat you may have to force feed him. Do you have Critical Care? If not, you can use a mush made of pellets. You don’t want him to start any GI problems. Poor little guy, give him a hug from me.

thanks. he’s doing a bit better today. i’ve set him up in the main room with me, and gave him critical care and some gas medicine early this morning. he’s pooped a bit more, and i’ve seen him nibbling on veggies, pellets and sipping water. crossing my fingers and keeping a close eye on him.

I’m going out of town for christmas week 7 days. The pet sitters will be taking care of him, coming in once a day.  Now that Alfred is gone, i;m worried. Do you think Seymour will be ok? I usually have a timer set for music to play during a certain time period. Maybe i will do the tv this time. Seymour knows the pet sitters, they also come and clip the bunnie’s nails.

First let me offer my condolences on your very heartwrenching decision about Alfred. I agree totally with LPT – you did everything humanely possible to help him and to stop his suffering. It is a sad loss for you and for Seymour, who is also grieving.

I think the steps you’ve taken for Seymour will help a lot. Stay close to him yourself, along with the surrogate stuffed animal. If you were leaving this week I would be concerned, but I think with attention now, and pet sitters that he knows, plus being in his familiar surroundings, he will be ok by Christmas week. Perhaps the sitters could come by twice a day instead of just once, both for monitoring his health and for companionship. He will need pets from them, too.

I’m so sorry for your loss, levy. Alfred’s in a better place now. I’m glad you and Seymour have each other- you’ll be able to help each other through it.
