My rabbit, Daisy, is a outside rabbit.  would like her to be an inside rabbit.

What things would I need to teach her for this?

What things would I need for her?

People keep saying that the cage I have for my bunny is to small. It is 3 feet long, 2 1/2 feet deep and 2 1/2 feet tall.

They are also saying that wire is harsh in their feet and hock. But my bunny has long fur on her feet. And I have not seen any damage.

          Bunny Daisy,

I would highly recommend that you read up on articles on this site and also the House Rabbit Society on rabbit housing and care.

As for the sore hocks, here is a good article:
          http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sorehocks.html
          And also housing
          http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/housing.html

It does not matter if their feet have long fur — rabbits have no padding on their feet like dogs and cats. Wire bottom cages can cause sore hocks which are painful, even bloody feet and can turn into something worse. I’m not trying to scare you, but please do read up on the care of your rabbit for the sake of them. It will save you lots of money and less stress in the long run.

Well I cant change the cage because of how much I spent on it. And I had bunnies when I was a Little girl, and they were in a wire cage for 55 years, and they were fine.

              LoveChacha is correct Baby Daisy.

Definitely read up on what is proper rabbit care. I know you mentioned in your other post about the breeder keeping her rabbits on wire cages and LoveChacha replied to that as well – please read her reply so that you understand better.

As for bringing her outside to inside, there is nothing to learn but to give her the proper and adequate housing and making it large enough and comfortable enough to have a litter box.

House Rabbit keeping has changed a lot over recent years — and a lot of medical research has gone into rabbits, so please do read up on the information. It is valuable and crucial to a bunny’s wellness.

Firstly let me say “Kudos and Well Done” on your decision to bring her in. She will be so much happier indoors. Their feet can be easily damaged by walking on a wire base. Part of my bunnies bungalow has a wire drop through so I line it with several thick sheets of newspaper. I tried blankets but they prefer the newspaper and just pee on the blankets. What sort of cage is it, the wood and wire or plastic and wire. Can you extend the area with NIC cubes to make it roomier once indoors, that way you won’t need a larger cage. Some of the wooden runs also have extensions that can be purchased and just hooked on to the entrance, this will almost double the space. I can find you some links… Can you post a pic of the cage so I know which ones to link ?
Once again. Well done on your great decision to make your bun a happy house rabbit !!!! Wish more people would see the light.

Oh, You will need a litter tray and some Xpens to exclude her from areas that might be hazardous for her. What part of the house is she coming into, roughly what is the area and are there any hazards you need to exclude or cordon off ? That way it will be easier for people to suggest things you might need.

OK. I will try to put a picture of the cage, and it is made up of wire, wood, and cookie trays under the cage. I will probably put my bunny in a ccorner, away from the noise. And the cage is raised up off the ground…. so i guess I could just cut off the legs.

If it’s not too high you could leave the legs on and make a ramp then your bun will have the space under the cage to play in too.

Have you checked out some of the set ups in the bunny habitats link on the home page? You might get some design ideas from there aswell.

This is a fantastic idea!!!  We had a member years ago who did this exact thing in her home and it looked great and worked well for her!  If you do this, you might want to put an xpen around the base so you could leave the hutch door open 24/7 and give her a permanent “play area”, even when you’re not around to supervise.

A side note… we ask that you don’t cross-post topics.  This one can stay because it’s focusing more on the wire-bottom issue and you’ve gotten a lot of good advice so far.  But just for future reference, posting the same or very similar topics in different sections will result in the duplicate thread being deleted.  This is not unique to our site, this is a rule on almost every forum regardless of topic; it just keeps things from getting confusing.

                                Hi Baby Daisy,
How are the preparations going, have you already brought her in ? Once I see your cage I’ll go on a search and find some pics of the extensions available.

The entire site is geared towards house rabbits. Each section has a brief description of what topics belong there. There is also a Habitat specific section.
