So as I was exploring craigslist, i typed in orchard grass and to my surprise i found some people in tennessee coming down to texas on friday selling orchard grass which is mixed with timothy? but mainly orchard. still dont know if it will bother my allergies since i am allergic to timothy – but can handle orchard grass sort of. it’s not that pretty but it wont kill me.

do you think there is too many brown bits or is 8$ for orchard grass a good deal?

i bought 20lbs of orchard grass from sierra valley which i am pleased with but it has a lot of brown? which my rabbits do not like and won’t eat. i dont know if all orchard grass has that much brown but i know that hay is natural and its bound to have brown – which i understand i just think its a bit too much. what do you think? its in like a 2 string nearly 60lbs bale!

Looks just fine! Color of hay depends on what type of hay, what time of year, what cut and all sort of things; I wouldn’t worry about it having brown, it looks like very soft nice hay and if they don’t eat the brown you can throw it out as they leave it. Very good deal on a bunch of hay

Most large bales of hay will have a fair amount of brown in it. Looks fine to me. My rabbits actually pick out the browner crunchier bits and stalky bits and leave the leafy green parts. lol

they said it was the “4th” cutting i really have no idea what all that means but yeah! haha. im just worried that my rabbits wont eat hay as much cause of the brown, the hay i have now has a fair amount of brown and before i give it to my youngest bun i take out most of the brown which takes at least 10 minutes. i leave some in there so she will know later on that the brown hay tastes different? my older rabbit will ignore the brown bits completely but not my younger bun and im worried she wont eat that much hay later on cause she thinks that hay tastes bad even though it’s just the brown? sorry if this is so confusing! ive only had 6-7 hours of sleep in 2 days! argh

Brown strands are fine. It’s mold and dust you have to worry about.

Just double triple dittoing. People can get worked up about the aesthetics of brown hay. Brown, like in the photo, doesn’t mean bad. It just means less nutrition but hay isn’t really consumed for nutritional reasons anyway. It’s consumed for the fiber. Rabbits digestive systems are actually suited for nutritionally stark food (that’s why they produce cecals that they consume). Some bunnies may prefer the taste of certain strands over another, but each bunny is different. So if your bunny is fine with it, then that’s great. My bunny Rucy used to eat the brown strands first.

Brown/black, black or a dusty/musty and/or moldy smell is what you have to watch for.

Fourth cutting is typically much softer, less fiber (but nothing to worry about!), than first cutting hay.
