        Hello! I’m new

Over the last couple of weeks my roomates and I have had a TERRIBLE problem with flies in our house, not sure exactly what kind they were but they seemed to be multiplying day by day and were swarming all over the house.

Recently my roommate bought Raid Flying Insect spray and sprayed all over the house, including my room where my bunnies live.

I am terrified that some of the mist might’ve gotten into their cage and on their hay, or even on their fur and they might ingest it when grooming each other. I’ve mopped the floors and I have fans on to air the room out. The buns seem perfectly fine, but I am a worry wart.

Is there anything I should be on the lookout for in case they have ingested or inhaled some of the Raid spray?

        Thank you so much

Hi Christine, Welcome, Your buns are beautiful…. Bug spray or chemicals near them is never good. Did your house mate just spray the whole room or was she careful to point it away from them ? I would be on the watch for any changes in behavior such as lethargy, nervous grooming, not eating, excessive drinking, diarhhea etc. If any of their food was exposed it would be a good idea to replace it and thoroughly was all their food and water receptacles. Wash their blankets and toys thoroughly and wipe down any surfaces they come in contact with.
You used to be able to buy little stick on flowers that went on windows and walls that had a surface insect killer in them. They work really well but have been hard to source lately. I currently have old fashioned fly paper strips up in my bunny room. I don’t know what country you are in but this time of year in Australia little sticky flies are a huge problem and the enormous blow flies are starting to come out too. In one way it is good your room has been treated as you do not want your buns suffering fly strike but maybe start looking for some solutions that will restrict their exposure to any chemicals and remind your house mate to be careful about using any products in your room where the buns live.

Hi Christine! Is there a bug problem in the room where the bunnies are, too? I don’t think Raid is supposed to be used inside. It can be very unhealthy for any pets. I would call an exterminator if there is a problem. They can treat the house with chemicals that are not as damaging to pets – so you would only need to monitor or move your bunnies for a day or so. Also exterminators know what concentration to use that will not hurt animals, whereas your roommate probably does not.

I would just keep an eye on them, and consider alternatives in the future Good luck!

Best solution if you are having a fly issue is fly trap with honey base to attract them, honestly. Keep an eye on them for drooling, lethargy, lack of appetite etc.

I think Raid is supposed to be alright for most mammals in reasonable doses, but it’s definitely still a good idea to keep an eye on them. Activity level, food/water intake, and pee/poop frequency are the best indicators of bunny health..watch out for changes!

I would go with flytraps and then find out how the flies are getting in the house. For us it was bringing in firewood but it may be a broken screen on a window or any number of things. Pesticides and chemicals aren’t good for anyone’s health so if you can get your room mate to stop, find out how they are getting in and use some fly traps to deal with the ones who got in that would be best.
If they are crazy bad-you can vacuum flies Learned that trick at the lake.

Since it was already done, I would suggest tossing the hay that was in their cage at the time. Thoroughly wash out all the food dishes, change the litter and wash the pan, and maybe damp cloth wipe down the surfaces of their habitat. It is mostly to get any residue of spray off their stuff. Ask her not to do it again – that you will handle bugs in your room. (fly strips, or a dish with honey and water that catches the flies might help. Guys, what is that home remedy formula again?)

They won’t be hurt but it’s not good for them to breathe or taste.
