In a year or so, I will be moving out of state. From California to Oregon. Plan on driving there. However. I ain’t entirely sure how the rabbits would react to such a long drive. According to mapquest, it will take about 10 hours to get to my destination. I considered flying but i ain’t fond of it. Driving is the best solution available for me. What can i do to help ease my three rabbits during the move? I plan on having them share a large dog crate during the ride.

I agree that driving would probably be the preferable option to flying. Are you planning to drive it all in one go?

Yup. All in one go. One long ten hour drive.

I think it’ll be fine. My parents live 7-8 hours away and we’ve taken the buns a couple times. I give them some hay and lettuce (mostly for the water content) but they don’t eat much. At home their feeding times are more than 12 hours apart, and they don’t drink water more than once or twice a day (that I’ve ever seen) so 10 hours sitting in a carrier really isn’t an issue.

The only reason I’d be worried is if one of your buns was extremely nervous and high strung, but then flying would be worse I’m sure. My girl is fairly high strung and she manages.

You could always try some short 1 hour trips before then to see how they do and get them used to it.

I moved from MA to FL while driving alone with one bunny for 3 days/2 nights. You want to have the crate bottom with a pan-like bottom in which you can put litter, or at least a litter box. A soft towel on the bottom will help give them traction and soak up any spills or pee. Bring water dishes and bottled water, to be given at rest stops. Don’t let them out at rest stops but keep the carrier in a warm or cool place at all times. I moved in July so had to take my bunny inside in a carrier with me. Sounds like you can keep them in the car during stops if it’s not too extreme in temp. Bring food dishes and pellets. Maybe a cooler for greens and the water bottles. Put hay for munching inside their crate. If you’re driving alone you need to stop more. But if you are taking turns with another driver, you can stop, stay with the bunnies while you take turns getting bathroom breaks and take out food to eat in the car. I found that pushing on for a 10 hour trip worked out fine. The risk of moisture spilling in the crate bottom is high from the motion, and my bunny got a bit of sore hocks before I realized he’d stood in some sloshed water. So have paper towels and trash bags to wipe it dry and clean, take out soiled litter and toss wet uneaten greens. It will go by fast with fewer stops. Don’t risk letting them loose until you arrive at your destination. With three, it’s very easy for one to slip by.
                Have a good trip!
