So i have an 8 week old holland lop female (almost 9 weeks – on monday) and i have noticed she hasnt been eating her cecals at all. I took her to the vet on wednesday and got her treated for mites, they said she might not need a 3rd treatment since it is VERY mild. but we will see when the time comes. her next treatment is on wednesday (21st) and they also sent me home a fecal kit, to see if she has any internal parasites – i will bring that on wednesday when i go back to get her second treatment of ivermectin.

i told the vet this and she said it wasnt normal. she is a rabbit savvy vet – i love her plus she is on the rabbit.org site! the vet said that older rabbits who have a hard time reaching will not the cecals but my bunny seem fine so she doesnt know why. but in the mean time, does anyone know or have any idea of why she isnt eating her cecals? she eats oxbow alfalfa hay and alfalfa pellets, and fresh water she seems to be eating and drinking just fine and also uses the litter box! she likes to run around and do mini zoomies and binkies as well!

could it be that her diet is too rich? or is that not a possible reason for her to not be eating her cecals? also how do you pronounce cecals? when i said it (i probably said it wrong) the vet smiled a bit in a silly way haha

i dont know WHEN she produces them but sometimes she will sleep in a corner and later when she wakes up theres a pile of cecotropes where she was sleeping. other times they are scattered; as if she dropped them while hopping around – but not smashed so she couldnt have stepped in them and then walked around and the poop fell off of her leg/ bum. I’m afraid that she will step in them and make a huge mess; because today i just randomly lightly lifted her and when i did i felt some poop stuck to her bottom so i got a towel and flipped her over and gently pulled out the poop, im so thankful that my other rabbit doesnt have this mess, he freaks out if i touch his rear, and HATES it when i flip him over or hold him – which i am unable to do. (i only do this for nail clippings)

I’ve often found that when my rabbits are on medication they do not eat their cecals. I would say give it a bit after the treatment to worry. AS long as she’s eating and drinking and pooping and peeing and moving around things are OK

Hmmm if it started before treatment it could be that her diet is too rich. What type of fruits and veggies does she get?
I bet the vet smiled when you said cecals as they were impressed you were so informed

She isn’t on any veggies or fruit, I know that bunnies CAN start nibbling on veggies as soon as they are able to eat solid foods – if the mom gets veggies daily that is, but I don’t think my rabbit has ever had veggies, I think I will wait until she is around 12 weeks just to be safe! Her diet consists of only oxbow alfalfa pellets + oxbow alfalfa hay. And LOL sure we can say that
