I adopted Tux about a month ago, and he’s 8 months old. His previous owners named him, but as I’ve gotten to know him, I’ve been feeling like it’s time for a name change. I never liked the name Tux for him but kept it at first because I figured it was enough to change for him to come to a new home and live with a stranger. Now we’re good friends, and every time he hops over to his food bowl and stands on his hind legs, wiggling his nose in the air, all I can think is, “please sir, may I have some more?” He’s such an Oliver. Will I ruin his life by changing his name? Is it too late?

Does he respond to his name? If he doesn’t, I don’t see that it would change anything for him. Ruby seems to respond to anything that I say in the same tone I usually use when I speak with her (I may or may not talk like a baby when I speak to her )

I don’t think it would cause too much trouble, it’s really only a big deal because then he has to relearn his new name. It might take a few weeks to learn a new name but I don’t think he would mind. I recommend switching to a two syllable name because it’s easier for most pets to recognize. Switching from Tux to Oliver shouldn’t be too difficult

Generally the “Don’t change a pets name” idea stems from people who own dogs, when they are off leash and something goes wrong a person will need to have a dog that recognizes their name and will return to the handler. For rabbits it’s a little different because most bunnies are not allowed in an environment or a situation where things can go that wrong.

I say go for the name change , better to do it now than live with a name you don’t like for the next 8-12 years.

I wouldn`t worry about changing his name. Maybe if he was 6 years old, he would actually notice, but I doubt he will. Just use his new name whenever you talk to him so he gets the hang of it.

I think it’ll be just fine. Oliver is a cute name!
