what in goodness names is a “binky”?
        anyone from Ontario?
any other bunny lingo i should know so i dont go “huh??” when talking to someone or reading posts?
my guy is used to another buns around, he lost his sister monday to a panic attack (tragic, we came home to her passed away in her own cage, looks like her foot had gotten caught and she panicked, she was very odd..shy, and nervous but sweet) so we are saving to get him neutered and get him a friend. being only 7months old, would he be best to pair with another young buns?  same breed or is it ok to mix fixed animals? i love dwarfs and lionheads…so cute and great for the kids to play with!

ill have more Qs later but i think thats ok for now…

Hiya! I am from Ontario Toronto to be exact… nice to see some other Canadians on here
Where in Ontario are you from?

Binkies are the cute jumps and hops they do in the air.. you know when they jump up when they are happyy and kick in the air…those are binkies!
im so sorry that ur bun lost his sister..thats very sad..how is he coping with it? I know alot of buns get lonely after they lose someone that they were close too.. keep him occupied n show him lots of love and attention so he doesnt feel too sad!

            thanks for the answers!

Im from near Peterborough, Lindsay in fact which is an hour and a half from Toronto. NOT looking forward to Sandy hitting us. yuck! I’ll be keeping all pets indoors for sure

he’s sad, you can tell he misses her, poor guy. we play with him lots and he’s allowed on the couch now for cuddles (which was a no no before) but he looks for her all the time in her old favourite spots. my daughter gave him her stuffed bunny that resembles his sister and smelled like her so its helping a bit. “she” stays in the bed or in the hay box

Welcome to BB! I’m not sure if there is anyone on here that is specifically from Ontario but I’m sure we have some Canadians lurking around. =]

I’m so sorry to hear about your bun! Buns are non discriminatory when it comes to gender or age. Rabbits will bond with anybun and everybun pretty much. I did have a vet suggest to me to try to bond my little girl with a younger bun. Only because she is queenly and likes to be top bun. An older bun she said would more resistant to her sometimes haughty air. So, if you find you have a more dominant bun trying to find a more submissive one will be a better match for him and make it easier on you during the bonding process. If you find yourself with a pretty mellow bun then you have nothing to worry about.

Rabbits love to do two things when they are playing: binkies and zoomies/the bunny 500. Binkies as Aria&Circe said they are the cute little jumps they do. Zoomies/Bunny 500s are when they run reallyyyyyy fast and zip across the house.

Welcome to BB! And I’m also very sorry to hear about his sister. Binky Free little girl! <3

As for bonding with another bun — I totally agree with SkippersMama. Was your little guy the dominant or submissive one of the two? I know with my bonded trio, it worked out VERY well because one boy is dominant as all heck, while the girl is more independent but not very dominant at all, and my 2nd boy is EXTREMELY submissive. They were all bonded with very little effort which I’m thinking was due to the perfect personality fit.

You can also take your little guy to a rescue or shelter when they are doing bunny runs and let him pick out his own new little friend to bring home!

Oh thanks Tanlover! I had totally forgotten to suggest that! Silly me. It is easier to bond buns if you can have them choose their own buddy. =]

I’m sorry you lost your little girl, Binky Free!!

Trust me when you see the binky, you’ll know it! Sooo cute

I don’t have any experience bonding but like these guys said it helps if you let your bun choose his friend. I also heard (and I’m not sure how accurate this is) that males and females get along much better than two males or two females would.

Letting them pick is probably super cute to watch too

I would say it’s mostly personality a lot more than genders.   It’s a common … thought? … that females and males will bond together better but in my experience that’s very untrue.  My two boys were WAY easier bonded than my boys and girl.  The girl has a more dominant yet independent personality where my other boy is completely submissive.  I literally had them together for not even 5 minutes before this was happening.

My dominant male was even still un-neutered in this picture.  So he had lots of hormones and attitude yet they were inseparable from the time I took this picture til now.  Literally, inseparable.  They follow each other EVERRRYWHERE.

Here’s another picture which was taken only through 2 days of bonding.

There is absolutely nothing but love between these two.  My girl was actually the one that wouldn’t take any crap from my dominant boy and was very dominant towards my submissive boy so it was a bigger battle with her — which is why I hold a strong opinion that it’s ALL based on personality of the rabbits you’re bonding.

Tanlover your little ones make me want SQUEEEE with adorableness. I really hope bonding Skipper is as easy for me as it was for you and your kids. =p

I do want to ask. Is your boy neutered? I know that where I live none of the rescues will let you do bunny dates until a month or month and two weeks have passed after your bun has been speutered.

thanks guys for all the help and support!
Aria and Amp(hope i got it right) How did you fare out with sandy? we got hit but nothing severe, just a few broken branches and the top of the hutch got blown open and broke (silly me forgot to lock it-thank goodness Hippy was inside the house)

yes, his sister “Hop” was the same age, litter mates. She was the dominant one, very aloof when she wanted to be. I havent seen him do any binkies since she passed, cant really do zoomies as we have hardwood, its REALLY funny to watch him try to get going fast. we put carpets down in the cool months so hopefully we will see zoomies then. He’s very sucky and sits with me for hours on the sofa. if i put him down he hops right back up or tries to. he seems to think my shoulder is his personal pillow and headbuts me if im not sitting or laying “properly”. Hubby finally saw him do what i think is just the funniest thing, Hip will kinda do a headbutt/shoulder roll then FLOP when he lays down to rest on his side. his head goes then the rest just flops! ive got new pics (took some last night) but have no idea how to post..

there really arent many rescues around here 🙁 local humane society has GPs but yea, we all know that wont work out. Im talking with a lady who has a tort cailco dwarf who is around the same age as well as some lionhead babies that were dropped off with thier mom when the owners found out she was pg (sad eh) the babies are ready in another week. so I may go with either choice. Hippy goes in for his pre-op appointment on the 7th and the neutur will be booked after that 🙂

Oh and btw, Hippys a footish long (hard to tell when he doesnt stay still..lol)
ears are 4inches from tip to head. (heard somewhere its easier to tell what kind of bunny it is by ear measurements?)
he’s white with broken brown/tanish patches

You can try this same process with a breeder also if you can’t find a Humane Society. When we took my bun back to pick out another from the litter she even advised that we bring him with us and let him choose his partner! Of course, he picked out the bossiest girl alive. I think he likes her challenge for himself. He was in LOVE with her while she thumped up a total storm at him. It seemed to be who he wanted though so we brought her home with us! (Thinking back, he could’ve just followed her around like a lost puppy dog because she was a female!) hahahaha. But it was funny none-the-less.

Lol tanlover! i like that idea.

crazy q, but we got home tonight from trick or treating and omgoodness the living room stunk! cant even describe the smell! went to clean out Hippys cage (i jerryrigged the two smaller cages together for when we arent home until we make our CC themed one in a couple weeks, hes been ok with that the past week when he is caged) There were a couple odd looking white smears in the cardboard hideybox/diggybox..he looks fine and was happy to see us but the only way i can describe them is almost like a dried whitish paint smear..
did he spray? what the heck? is he mad at us or finally hitting full on puberty? he’s had full testes for about a month at least..

White smears? It may be (don’t quote me) a whitish residue that can be left from pee. Bunny pee can vary in color and if they are getting a lot of calcium in their diet their pee will have a milky/whiteish look to it. How often do you clean your bun’s cage? I clean mine daily to minimize the possibility of fly strike and stench.

hmmm, can they get calcium from raw cabbage? he’s been getting the cores and some leaves from my hubby who uses the rest for our restaurants coleslaw. and he’s been getting more carrots lately as they are his all time favourite treat. good point Skipper’s Mama, Maybe thats what the issue is! I’ll cut back his carrots/cabbage intake. he does love his daily bunny salad thought! (romaine, carrots, leaf lettuce and dandelion weed+ i add in a couple slices of apple or raisin every mon and fri)

I clean his litter area (half trained as he is rebelling, hormones! cant wait till he is neutured!) every day and do a thorough clean of the entire cage area every 3rd day unless needed more. He’s overall pretty neat.

Definitely cut back on the carrots! They should be only given to buns as treats. The carrot tops, however, are okay. I remember at one point a member had posted a list of calcium rich vegetables. I’ll have to search for it. I can’t remember if cabbage was one. Here is a really good site that helps with vegetables and how much of them should be given to a bun. http://rabbit.org/care/veggies.html =] It’s my bunny Bible while I go grocery shopping.

UGH spraying. It’s so annoying. I feel your pain! My little girl is getting fixed on the 20th.

The hutch can be fixed in the spring, not too worried about it as no bun is going in there until warmer weather. Nope our bunnies only went out for an hour or so every day or two when i was out with the kids or dogs. Our bunnies (now just Hippy at the moment RIP Hop) are house bunnies. He has a playyard and i’ve doubled/jerryrigged the starter cages together so he has a bit more room when he is caged until we can get time to build one 🙂
