I found that my male rabbit’s penis is not like normal. He is not spray, but his penis is like neuter rabbit. When I had little pressure on around of that, I found that there was little blood and bluish black. I am so worried and scared, I have lost one bunny, I dont want to be lost my last bunny. I go to vet today and the vet doctor said he is phlogistic urinary organ. I am still scared because vet doctor in my country is not familiar with rabbit. I sent two picture to you, please check this and give me some advice, please help me.

              I am not at all.

I would email the House Rabbit Society at this email:

              health@rabbit.org

and see if they can help you.

Thanks so much. He is dawf, 2 years old, he eats, drinks as normal, his poo is little smaller than before, yesterday his urine is white ( I have searched and found that urine is white because he has much Ca in diet). He eat food and hay of Oxbow. After injection, he sleep more than normal.

Is it possible that he was injured or injured himself? Is there blood in the urine at all? Is the penis still retracting in to the sheath? I would keep the area lubricated and use a topical antibiotic (like Neosporin) if there is not scabbing.

It sounds like your vet is working on it, especially if he is going in for another treatment tomorrow. I looked up the definition of phlogistic, and it means inflamed. He was given an anti-biotic injection, so it seems to me that the vet is treating whatever may be going on. If it’s inflamation that’s being treated right, he will probably look a lot less red or swollen within about 24 hours. Ask the vet to tell you what he thinks causes this, and if you need to do anything else such as change his environment (Irritated by anything, like hard litter maybe?) or give him any other treatment, like the topical ointment (Neosporin) that was mentioned. I would hold off multiple medicines today until you see the vet again tomorrow so you don’t use anything that has a bad interaction.

You can also go to the HRS site http://www.rabbit.org, and search for their list of international vets. There’s access to those lists pinned at the top of this Q&A Forum too. Maybe you can locate a rabbit vet near where you live. Even if there is one in the nearest city in Japan, you might be able to email a vet’s office and show them the photo and ask their opinion too.

Thanks all for your care and advice.
Now it is 4am in my country, I dont sleep all night to check him reguarly. His tempurate is lower 38 C degree for a moment,I wrap him with towel and used a bottle fill with hot water put around him. Now he is reach 39 C degree. He still drink and eat. But sometime I heard he make a sound when he sleep.
I have send his picture to some vet doctor in hong kong,I hope they will reply soon.
I use recycle paper for his litter, brand Back to nature.
I dont understand what “retracting in to the sheath “means so i can not check.

The picture in the #1 post is his penis when I press a little hard

The picture below is his P when I press softly. In the past, when I press like that, the P will pull over and is long, but now, it is just like the picture below, like P of the neuter rabbit. I can not understand why

Are you sure he is peeing okay? You said his urine was white. Could a stone be stuck in there? That is the only thing I can possibly think of, but I don’t have any experience with something like this happening. At least not with a rabbit. My chinchilla had a problem where his penis became swollen and he could not pull it back in. We took him to the vet and they got things put back together. There was no blood though and was most likely a fur ring that he managed to get off (but not before everything became inflamed from messing with it). Rabbits don’t have that problem though or at least I have never heard of it. That is why I suggested that maybe a stone is stuck in there somewhere.

Do you have a vet there that deals with “exotics”? They might be more knowledgeable.

Welcome to BinkyBunny though I am sorry you are having problems with your bunny. Hope we can help in some way, at least to help you get help somehow.

I am a bit confused — The penis itself doesn’t change much when a bunny is neutered. The testicles are what change. When you push out the penis area more, it can definitely show more and the inside sort of folds out and it is not abnormal to see more redness and veins. However, it could be inflamed due to some sort of “sludge” which is the white urine. Is the white urine very thick? Or do you just see a bit of white in the urine. Some rabbits do excrete a certain amount of calcium and it’s normal, while excessive amounts can be a problem.

Does your bunny seem to take a long time to pee? Does he seem uncomfortable when he pees? Does he hang out in his litterbox a long time? I also wonder if he has a urine infection. Do you know what kind of anti-biotics your vet gave — (the english translation).

In the night after the first injection of doctor, when he pee in dark green towel I used to keep him warm, I saw the pee is white, no blood, no sludge. They smell as normal. There were three times he pee white urine in that night, and now he pee yellow, little cloudy.

I think he seem to take long time to pee and he refuse using litter box about week ago,I must cover the cage with litter to keep him not to wet by his urine. Maybe he is not comfortable, he lay down for a little about 5minutes, and get up, change position, lay down for a while and get up…about 3-4 times chang position, he sleep for about 30 minutes and he go to eat and drink and again lay down….

It’s good that he is still eating and drinking — it’s also good that his urine seems be more yellow now. It could be possible that he has problems with calcium (some bunnies are just more prone to that) or he just ate something that caused him to excrete calcium for a bit. IF he does have a calcium problem, then making sure he drinks enough water and/or is hydrated is important. How old is he? What is his diet?

How many times does he change position? Is this within an hour? If he seems uncomfortable then that is a bit worrisome. Is he pooping? When you put your ear up to his stomach, can you hear a very light gurgling? A healthy tummy will lightly gurgle about every 5 -10 seconds. Is he grinding his teeth? (sometimes bunnies will grind their teeth when they are in pain).

Normal rabbit temperature is 38.3C – 39.4 C (101F – 103F), so I am glad you were able to get his temperature up if it was below 38c. But it does worry me that it was getting low.

Do you know the name of the antibiotic that your vet gave? Was it an oral injection or through the skin?

He is 2years and 3 months, he eats food and hay of Oxbow, three or four times a week, I give him fruit like slice apple, one grape, or strawberry, or some piece of carrot, lemon balm I grow…

I have let him back from vet, the vet use injection through skin, it name Baytril ( Bayer). I suggest vet X rays for him to check about bladder stone, after check film, the vet say he has gas in tummy. The vest again give him antibiotic.

I have check gas in tummy maybe make his tempurate low. I am so worried.

He still poo, but there are some poo that are smaller than another, poo is moisture, not too dry, so I think he is not dehydrate. I see that there are some move on tummy, maybe every 10 seconds. I dont see he is grinding teeth.

I check his tempurate every 1 hours, it is near 38.5 C, I put some towel in cage but he does not lay on, he move the towel by mouth, dig litter in cage to clear area to lay. Still change position 3-4 times within about 30-45 minutes. Sometime he grooming himself, lick me when I pet him, still eat soft poo.

Penis does not look that abnormal to me… most rabbit penises look like that if you press hard enough.. it may be a bit more erythemic (red) but can quickly get that way if you keep checking it. And I agree with above statement… have not seen rabbit penis’s change one bit with neutering. Sometimes rabbits will ‘hump’ each other unsuccessfully (even if neutered…a dominance thing) and bruise their penises a bit.. perhaps that is all that is wrong there.

He seems to sleep much than normal. Does antibiotic injection make him sleep much? He still drink, eat, poo and pee. I am afraid that because I am so worried so I dont realize he is better.

I think that strong antibiotics can cause drowsiness. It also could just be that the little guy is fighting an infection, so he is more tired than usual.

This is called Hypospadias. A genetic condition in which the penis fails to form properly making him unsuitable for breeding as it can be passed on but he likely isn’t capable of breeding due to the short length in comparison to a fully formed penis. He may also be sterile and have 1 or both testicles fail to drop properly. He can live a very happy life as a pet house bunny but on the breeder side most breeders that catch this cull them and both parents to avoid risk of continuing the genetic defect.
