Hey I haven’t really posted recently due to being very busy from starting my last year at uni! I needed some casual research and thought that the people of these forums would be best for it since everyone seems to be juggling 10 things at once with life + pet + education wise!

I’m making a set of 15 cards and basically they’re suppose to be interactive in terms of the person has to try and balance the cards to make a pyramid structure. It’s sort of like a figurative meaning to show that in order to balance things (like balance elements of design) you need to have a sturdy foundation and base to hold it up and how it all works together in order to be successful as if one card is taken the whole thing will fall.  Basically my project is about having a design manifesto and I decided to do my manifesto as a personal belief. Which is the belief in balance of life which can be applied to the balance in design.

I just wanted to ask you guys what things do you balance in life personally? I’ll start off with a few I’ve thought up of

        Chores – Hobbies

        Work – Play

Love for food – Irritable Bowl Syndrome (sorry guys haha it was one of my balances in life I’ve had to go through)

Any contributions would be great =) Thanks guys!

          What a great manifesto.
I struggle to balance personal downtime vs sleep, and usually end up short on one or the other.
Materialistically, needs vs wants. I tend to convince myself many of my wants are needs, but I don’t really “need” a new purse or jeans etc.
As a pet lover I struggle with wanting more vs putting more time in with the ones I have, if that makes sense.

Ah yay! I was scared no one was going to reply!

I think the materialistic one is very applicable to most of us. I was finding things to draw/design onto a card and you’ve given a great example =D
Also what do you mean by wanting more. As in wanting more materialistically or from other people ?
            Thanks for your responses!!!

I can only think of one right now but it’s a big one. Working to make money vs. Spending time with the ones I make money for.

                  My checkbook!

Seriously, if you don’t balance it, then your income and outflow of $ can get your whole life screwed up and off course in the blink of an eye. It lets you know where you stand in terms of your priority expenses.

But it can also play into the bigger picture of a sense of self-respect and feelings of being respected by others. If you are paid what you believe your time and effort is worth, you are feeling balanced. If you are not, then probably your basic needs are not being met, and your emotional needs aren’t either. So if you can’t make ends meet, you are off balance. And your self image may suffer. Artists, for example, are not happy when they are starving. They are hungry, and starved creatively as well.

                      School v work.
                      Work v time off
Taking care of myself v taking care of everyone else

Positive thought v’s negative thought patterns. Very easy to get caught up in the negative.

Natural healing v’s treating with medications. Sometimes is better to let the body do its thing. Sometimes you need to assist or intervene. Be it choose one way or the other or combine both, getting the balance right so both methods work synergistically. If that makes sense!

                        Being concise v’s being verbose.
