post-spay eating

callie got spayed today! i brought her home about two hours ago. the vet said she came out of the anesthesia around two but she hasn’t eaten since then even though they offered her stuff. she did get sub cu fluids. i let her rest a bit after getting home then tried to give her bananas and carrots, but she wasn’t interested. so i blended them with some water and force fed her 10-15 ml via syringe because i know it’s so important that they eat. right now she’s resting in her cage with access to pellets, hay, and vegetables. she gets more pain meds in 1.5 hours. should i force feed her more, or wait until morning to check out what’s missing?

I would give her her meds, leave out some yummy foods for her, and clean her littler box. If by morning she still hasn’t touched any food or made any poops, call the vet!

Usually it can be a full 24 hours from the surgery for females to even want to eat. That’s pretty normal. Leave fresh greens for her to eat. That will be most likely what she will eat first. I would try to disturb her as little as possible and let her rest.

It’s typically very normal for the females to not want to eat after their spay — my girl took over a few hours and she wouldn’t eat anything until I enticed her with some fresh herbs that she loves. I would give her space and rest to heal properly though. My little girl sat in a corner of her cage with her face facing the wall for hours. I was so sad for her but she eventually began to perk up. I wouldn’t force fed her anymore unless it becomes absolutely necessary for her needing food. It may just end up stressing her out more and you don’t want to risk tearing the stitches.

thanks everyone! i force fed her last night because i wanted to make sure there was something in her. when i got up in the middle of the night i offered her some veggies and she ate a small amount. this morning she ate one piece of lettuce. this afternoon she had maybe ten pellets and a few celery leaves. she’s hardly drinking at all but peeing as usual so i’m guessing that’s from the veggies. she is pooping, but not much. i figure that’s okay though because she’s not eating much. she spent the day lounging in her box. i only interrupt her for meds or to remind her there’s food. right now i’m satisfied with how she’s doing. she seems more alert today too.
