So - I don't know if I have ever contributed to the chats but wanted to ask y'alls opinion because I know you are all honest. My boyfriend and I have a favorite sushi restaurant in San Diego that we visit usually once a week. So we go out to dinner tonight and are sitting there and my boyfriend very calmly says "don't move". I'm thinking "OMG there is a spider on me" (and actually thought of the spider story going on here! hey, just because i don't contribute doesn't mean i don't occasionally follow along). No....it's a GIANT cockroach on the wall behind me...I'm talking maybe bigger than 3 inches long. Without causing a scene, my boyfriend gets up and grabs our waitress to tell her. The waitress gets the chef (of all people) who comes out with a kitchen blowtorch (not making this up...) and is banging around looking for the thing, finds it, lights it on fire, and it comes crashing down in a fire-y death onto the table (again, not making this up....). The waitress thank us for not making a scene as everyone in the restaurant is semi-staring at us thinking "what in the world did those people do?". So then - they bring us our check and there is no discount, no apology from the chef, nothing. The waitress was nice and all...but this is a place that we frequent VERY regularly so a lot of the employees either recognize or know us. So my question is - do we brush it off as a bad experience? do we never visit again? or do we maybe write the owner? i understand where there is food there are bugs - that isn't my issue...I work in Marine Science and some of the stuff I handle on a daily basis is 10x worse than a cockroach. It's basically the entire way the situation was handled from the blowtorch to the non-apology. Just thought I'd ask you guys! |

BMT (I almost called you Lola ) I personally wouldn't go because I have slight germophobia and whatever phobia it is to bugs but if that incident didn't bug you, there's no one to say you can't go back. It's bad business practice though how they handled the situation and the owner/manager might want to know. LBJ- I saw wings for sale at JoAnns. Do you have to make the costume yourself? |

I totally agree, FF. BMT -- if you do plan (and even if you don't) to visit again, I would definitely contact the person in charge of the place! That is TERRIBLE. The last restaurant we went to our burger wasn't done right and we complained because it was a $11 burger and the manager didn't charge us for ANYTHING AND gave us free food. Seeing something like that is not only a turnoff to customers but is deserving of something in return, ESPECIALLY FOR NOT MAKING A SCENE. I tell you, I would've gotten right up and left. Not to be rude, but I wouldn't be able to take it and I definitely would not be able to finish my dinner. I may have just watched to many Restaurant Impossibles (show on Food Network and is AWESOME if no one has ever seen it!) but it freaks me out about restaurants sometimes! Finally, out of work! And to celebrate I'm spending my Friday night with a bottle of wine, a bubble bath, and Crime and Punishment which I haven't had a chance to read all freaking week! I'm doing this, OF COURSE, after getting on BB and seeing whats up with everyone! I'm an addict... And I'm probably babbling.. but I've already drank half a glass. And I'm a total lightweight... LBJ -- I don't know how you do it! I give you props for even trying! I try really hard to be creative but it just doesn't happen for me. Also, maybe try uploading a pic of what you have so far to the chat? I'm sure SOMEONE on this thread could have an idea to give you! If you don't mind me asking, what's the fundraiser for? Hope your new girl is still doing good, FF! Any names yet??!? I'm excited to hear them once you guys decide! |

FF - I don't have to make the costume myself, but I have a budget I have to stay within. Well, I guess I could use my own money if I wanted. LOL What kind of wings were they? I've seen butterfly/fairy wings before. I'm just making sleeves to go over my arms that are wing shaped. Tanlover - Well, I don't know how well it is going to turn out. It probably won't be the most impressive thing anyone have ever seen since it is mostly going to be made of felt. The fundraiser is for the local nature center. I can try posting a pic tomorrow when I have better lighting. |

Skipper - definitely post a pic of your turtle! I would like to see as well but as for a tank, my turtle is supposed to get 10", but he's 3 yrs & only 5". He's in a 75 gallon all to himself. It's been said that a turtle should have 10 gallons per inch but a 75 would be perfect for my turtles size if you can get your hands on one. I don't know how big yours will get, usually females get larger. Do you know for sure Frankie is male? (Long foreclaws & long tail) For a filter, look for one that can filter a larger amount than what you have. I had a fluval 305 for quite some time but hated it. I now have an eheim 2217, great reviews & is recommended for tanks at about 165 gallons I believe. So far it works it works great! LBJ- best of luck for your costume! Can't wait to see pics I'm terrible at sewing or creating any kind of clothing. I can draw it out but that's about it haha. |

TL- I love that show. I used to watch HGTV before bed but lately I switched to Food Channel and I feel like I'm learning a lot from that show. LBJ- I feel like they were of the fairy/butterfly nature. If nothing else the ladies at JoAnn could help you figure out the wing stuff. The one I go to the Bf worked at for a couple years so I know the ladies are very nice and helpful. Hopefully they or someone can help you figure it out. As for names for "sweets". I like a recent suggestion to class up one of options. It's hard because nothing we will come up with will be as great as Bunjamin Franklin. I decided to take a night off and had myself a drink and some video games It's been a longggg week! I got some good news today so for once, I am looking forward to the next week! |

BMT : The owners of the Sushi Place .. are they Japanese or what ?? ... In Western Australia every Japanese Place I have gone too has been owned by Chinese and I am not joking, Chinese running Japanese Places and the food that is served I would not give to a person dying of hunger... A few places where closed down by the health department because of rats and the likes running about the place when the light were off. What you have stated, I would not be going back and I would be filing a complaint with the health department. |

So here's Frankie. We don't really know what sort of enclosure that she should be having. We do know that she is water turtle so the rest of her tank is water and those are the only rocks that she has in it. If anyone can give some suggestion as to what could help improve her life it would be great. =] And is it okay that her shell is peeling? I asked the bf about it and he said that is how she grows. |

SM, she's a yellow belly slider. She'll get 8" if she's really a boy, 12" if she's really a female. Mimzy hit the nail on the head with the filter issue. Get one that's rated for double the tank space. I have a rena filstar x3, it's rated for 175 gallons and I only have a 55 gallon tank, lol. My tank stays awesomely clean and non-smelly. I built an ATBA (above tank basking area) for my turtle, Torti. It's made out of plexiglass, silicon, and love and it makes it so I can fill the tank up all the way for maximum swimming area, and so she has a lot of room to chill out out of the water. This is an old pic... Torti's so much bigger now! |

Ohhhhh Zoologist Frankie's got to be a girl because she's about the same size length wise as Skipper when Skips goes into her hunched ball. I like the set up you have and I'll have to look into the filter. Once we move we won't be able to clean her tank the way we do now and it's honestly a lot of work. She's in a 20 gallon tank right now. And by taking a look at your set up she's in wayy too small of a tank for her size. I'll have to look into maybe making a plexiglass tank instead of buying a bigger glass one. Thanks Mimzy and Zoologist for your help. =] |

We are currently learning medical procedures in my clinical class that meets twice a week! The teacher wants us to understand what the patients are going through and if they ask us "Have you done this?" the answer will be "yes." o_O
So we all have to do a fecal occult test.. and we have learned hearing and seeing types of procedures. I got my ear flushed out in class and it was really weird and fun.
I'm pretty much ahead in my homework, which means more time for spend with Chacha, more time to exercise, and play video games YAY!!!!!!
There have been so many pumpkins coming through my line at work. They are so heavy, and I am thankful that I wear a back brace, otherwise I would be in so much pain! A lot of my customers have been super helpful and helping me lift the pumpkins back in the cart. We cashiers are SUPER thankful for people that are helpful! |

SM, if you're in a permanent residence you could think about making Frankie a pond? As long as it's deeper than 3' and has a muddy bottom she can stay out there year round since we have mild winters. You could build a big chicken wire cage around it and it could double as a run for Skipper
(Actually, I may take this idea for my own.... hm... now to buy a house with a backyard...)
Torti is in a 55 gallon and she's only 7 inches last time I measured. I want to buy her a bigger tank! Ideally I want to make her a pond, but that is ways away. I long for the day I don't have to lug her tank around every single time I move (usually yearly, ugh!)
I really like my rena filstar. I've been using them in various sizes since I had Torti, and been giving the smaller ones to my dad for his salt water tanks. The one I had for her when I was 17 still works! It's 6 years old. I would suggest the bigger, the better. It'll save you more time and money in the long run. I have 3 baskets in mine with 3 different filter pads, carbon, and stars to catch good bacteria. I double up on the fine mesh pads so it keeps the water cleaner. ALSO! I use sand instead of rocks. all the gunk sits on top and is scooped up by the filter so it doesn't get caught underneath rocks. and if she eats it she just poops it out, no big deal.
The basking area cost me ~$20 to make. They cut the plexi glass for me at the store, and the only big cost was the ramp which is a zoomed turtle dock.
In other news FINN IS ADORABLE AND I LOVES HIM. He's playing around with a cardboard box and got it stuck on his head. of course he pulled it off right as I got the camera out >_< |

Zoologist I wish I could. My bf's parents have an old fish pond in their backyard but since we have foxes, raccoons, and hawks I'm afraid they're going to get her. Finn sounds adorable!
The bf and I are a little worried about Skipper. She's been showing some symptoms of a gut that's slowing down. We're trying to work with her to get her out of this and to get her GI tract moving some more with pineapple and lots of belly rubs. =/ It's so frustrating because she'll do these real healthy big poos and then these real small ones a little later. If she's not better by tonight I might just stay home with her tomorrow and see if I have to take her in for an emergency vet visit. |

TL- turtles are AWESOME! And yes, they can live like 60-80 years if cared for properly. I knew when I got mine at 16 that it would be a life long commitment, and it's going to be pretty cool to be like, 70 and still have my pet from my teens My mom used to make apple sauce in the fall! it's one of my favorite memories with her. It was soooo muchhh workkk though. Kudos to you for putting in the effort. SM- that's why i suggested building an enclosure around it. I am going to do that when I have a backyard. Or if we're still in Florida I'm going to buy one of those houses that has the funky enclosed backyards. So weird. I've never seen those before until I moved down here. Enclosed backyard means turtle pond, cats can play outside with no problems, and a bunny run with no dangers! |

Can you sneak some pumpkin into her diet to help her pass poos more easily? Can't you also use vaseline? If you want I'll make up some pumpkin biscuits and send them to you. I got cute little bat cookie cutters I've been wanting to try out. They'd be pumpkin, banana, and pellets. |

TL those look amazing! And I personally like homemade applesauce more than store bought. I've gotten into the habit of making my own too but in small quantities since the bf hates applesauce. (He is so weird. xP) Can I just reach in and steal those cookies? They look sooooo good. I love little Frankie. You wouldn't think that turtles could be people animals but she really is. She'll let us hand feed her and pet the top of her head. She's really great. Zoologist the previous turtles they had back in the pond were released because an animal had ripped into the wire around the pond they had put up. =/ Maybe I can talk to the bf and his brother-in-law to see what we can do. |

I've apoointed a vet visit for Bosse on wednesday. He has been itching and scratching behind and on his ears alot lately (to the point where the hair is thinning a lot behind there), as well as itching a lot around on his entire body So I've appointed an all round wellness check, with a check for ear mites or other causes for his itching. Yesterday when I was going to clip his nails I also descovered he has broken a nail It looked as though it had bled. So the vet is going to check out his nail too. Hope everything turns out okay. |

Good luck vibes to Bosse. TL those all look so good. I've never had handmade applesauce but it sounds yummy! SM- we rescued a red ear slider in a mcdonalds parking lot when I was a kid. He/she was the size of a quarter and no wildlife in the area so we think bird dropped her. Well we raised her to a good size then released her in a wildlife sanctuary that my mom worked with where we knew the habitat was right for her. We named her "big mac" I'm taking sweets back to my usual vet. New vet sucked. She even grabbed her by the skin on her neck. From that point on I didn't like her. But she also didn't look inside ears or mouth. Just felt everything. And did a lot of unnecessary poking at her abdomen and then asks when she was spayed. *facepalm*. The doctor that's good at that office had an emergency (wife went into labor!) and we didn't feel like we could walk out but I can't go back there even if it was to see him because the possibility of getting her again is terrifying. Poor sweets. I'm worried she might have ear mites too because she is scratching her ears a lot too. I know my old vet will catch if it she does. It's worth the longer drive! If she does have ear mites, is it unreasonable to go back to other vet and ask for refund? That's what bf wants to do. $60 for a horrible check-up bugged him and I don't blame him. |
