Hi everyone! I’m wondering what all of your opinions are on this…

I have 2 mini-rexes that ARE NOT friends, so they both live in seperate rooms. They both have free range of their own room and are allowed to run in 2 seperate other areas when my husband or I are home. Dizzie “lives” in one of my spare bedrooms and Cupcake “lives” in the livingroom. When I get home from work, I let Dizzie run in the upstairs area and Cupcake gets to run in the basement. Both are so happy and zoom and binky up a storm! What I feel guilty about is, sometimes I work late (til between 7 or 9pm) or have errands to run after work and my husband works 2 jobs, so works late too. being Do you guys think my bunns are ok being “locked up” all day and into the night sometimes? Dizzie’s room is about 6 feet by 9 feet. She has a bunny safe mat on the floor so she can hop easily, tons of toys, 2 litter boxes, a cage to play in, a box house to play in and 2 hidey cubes. She has a ton of hay and 3 water bottles, plus her food. Cupcake is queen of the living room and likes to stay on my area rug. Her space is about the same size as Dizzie’s room. Cupcake has tons of toys, a hidey box, a litter box, tons of hay and her food. She also loves to hang out under our coffee table (thats why i dont have as many boxes and such for her to play in.) One of us always makes sure to stop home at home at some point during the day to check on them and make sure they have food, water and hay. They both seem really happy in their rooms, but are totally anxious to get out when i arrive home. (i put up gates in Dizzie’s doorway so she cant get out. Cupcake wont leave the rug…she HATES our hardwood floor and wont set foot on it )

        Should I feel guilty??

I don’t think you should feel guilty at all! Sounds like they have tons of room to run around in when you are gone and even more when you are home! Rabbits normally sleep during the day anyways and are awake during dawn and dusk. I think they have an awesome space with an awesome bunny Mom and Dad!

I don’t think so. 6×9 is adequate space for 1 bun For what its worth, I feel bad having my 2 in a 4×4 overnight, but when I open the door they either stay there or zoom out, across the house, and sleep under the bed all day.

I wouldn’t feel guilty. You are letting them out when you can, and giving them a shorter run later at night is still exercise and attention. They can get used to not knowing exactly what time they will be let out, and with toys and the right food and water, they are OK in their habitats.

Thanks, Ladies! I do feel better now. I always make sure to give them the love and attention they both deserve. Its hard when they have to be seperated

Dizzie doesn’t destroy her room at all. Part of “her” room is my scrapbooking room, which I have blocked off with shelves and her cage. When she goes in that part with me, she likes to rip paper and climb all over everything, but I’m there to supervise, so it’s not that bad. Other than that, she only thing I can say she has “destroyed” is, she likes to bite the plastic coating off of the metal wires that make up her gates. I find cute little piles of plastic when I come home.  I make sure she has a lot of toys because she is young and is a busy body. Cupcake lives in the living room. There is hardwood floors in there (which she hates and wont set foot on) so i have a big area rug down. I had to cover part of the rug with a strip of old carpet because she pulls at my rug (and ultimately ruined it). I dont know what she has against my rug, but she doesnt bother to rip apart the strip of carpet, or the carpet I put down in her pen area.

Do you let your bunn out when you get home? Maybe try testing him/her out in a “bunn proof” area when you leave and then gradually get bigger once you know you can trust her. I used to keep both of mine locked up when I was gone, but trough trial and error, I found ways that they can run and be out.

Sidebar, what size is your bun’s cage Elizabeth? Does she have cardboard boxes in there?

Yeah that is pretty small. I’m a huge fan of xpens, maybe you could get her one of those to add on to her cage, and bunny proof that area with some cardboard or a scrap of vinyl flooring? Until shes spayed and has a little better behavior I also put those grass mats you can buy over problem areas, Sam can be a problem sometimes but if theres one of those around she’ll eat/dig that instead.

Xpens are larger, like a dog exercise pen. Mine are 32 in. and really sturdy. The small animal specific kind are generally cheaply made and not good.

Is that a current picture? You might want to have a specific litter box, otherwise she won’t know to not just go everywhere.

If you don’t designate a spot to pee an poop, it’s much more likely she’ll get the bad habit of going everywhere.
