I just got home from a friends house who has a new puppy.  I know for a FACT that this puppy has kennel cough and is NOT being treated as of yet for it. I know it is highly contagious and humans can pass it around (without suffering from it directly), but can my bunny get kennel cough because I brought home the germs from my friends puppy?

As soon as I got home I cleaned my hands, arms and changed my clothes completely.  I have NOT touched or pet my rabbit tonight, not until I take a shower in a little bit. Could I still have exposed her to this?  Am I being too much of an over protective bunny mom?

I don’t think you need to worry, especially if you’ve taken care to change clothes etc. I *think* it’s caused by Canine-specific viruses or bordatella bacteria. that bacteria is often found in nasal passages of rabbits anyway without causing a problem. It cab cause infection in some though, usually if theyre already immune compromised from something else.

Is your rabbit Zee? I remember her baby pics!

I’m not sure about dog to bunny illnesses but I think your bun will be fine. I think it’s a good precaution to wash and change clothes. That’s what I would have done.

Agreed-I don’t think it’s communicable but hygiene between handling animals is really good to do anyways.

I have a rabbit with the Bordetella virus (Kennel Cough) and have dogs, cats, and another rabbit and none of them have gotten it, despite being exposed. I wouldn’t worry too much, good idea washing your hands and changing clothes though, just incase.

Thank you for the advice.  She is doing well and hasn’t been showing symptoms of kennel cough, so I’m sure she is okay from it.

HAHA, yes, her name is Zee.  It makes me happy that you remember her.  I’ve attached a picture of her today.  Thank you!

I don’t remember how to attach pictures.  I’ve tried doing it 3 times now.  I hope this time it works.
