We are looking into getting a sweet little bunny as a companion for my lionhead Elvis. The rabbit in question is a young (approx. 2 yr.old) jersey wooly. The only thing preventing us from bringing her home right away is the fact that she is not spayed yet. I was just wondering what kind of prices you all have payed for a spay so I can work that number into our expenses.

Typically, spays are more expensive. I paid 190.00 for Cinnabun back in March. It might be more in bigger cities.

The best thing to do is to call around your area and get quotes on this. It seems that the cost of spaying can vary greatly depending on where you live and just a ton of other factors. You are probably going to find that members will tell you anywhere from $95 to $300.

Ask the vet clinic what is included in the cost of the spay - pain meds, bloodwork, etc...you want to know the breakdown of the costs.

Definitely call around to get quotes. I called a number of places around my area, most people didn't even spay bunnies but were exotic vets.

The majority was a bit over $200, one place was even $385. I finally found one that was $140. So it really just depends where you go.

I called and talked to my nearest house rabbit society and local aspca for information on where they go. and thats how I found my vet. and she is awesome.

You can also call your local animal shelter. I know mine has vouchers for cheap spays to encourage people to get their pets fixed.

Spaying is about $300 in my area. Are you adopting thru a rescue or where is the bunny coming from? Have you looked into local rescues that have buns that are already speutered?

This bunny belongs to a good family friend of ours who is downsizing on some of her animals. I have looked into rescues, Elvis is from one of our local rescues. Our friend just asked if we could take her rabbit and she's such a sweetie, she'll be a tough one to pass up.

So far the best price I've found from calling around is $182 plus the initial exam. I guess that's not too bad though...

I adpoted my fuzzbuts via a shelter and they were then spayed/neutered and vet-checked including bloodwork.
Adoption cost is usually lower than even just a vet checkup and here in Norway it's half the price vs buying buns of breeders or petshops.

In my case I got my two fuzzbuts for $50 adoption fee each, while petshop charges $100 and vet checkup would be another $100 here.
I was lucky though as I found two perfect buns just waiting for a home.

Have you contacted the rescue that you adopted Elvis from? Maybe they would let you use their low cost vet services, so that you wouldn't have to pay so much for a regular vet. I know that you aren't getting the new bunny from them, but they may be inclined to help since you did adopt a bunny from them in the past.

Since you would be helping out a friend by taking her rabbit, do you think she would help with the spay cost? I would let her know the prices you have been quoted and see if she volunteers to chip in on the cost.
