Anyone have some weird traits their buns have?  Lola *HATES* the smell of cooking meat.  We thought it was just the grill and she would hunker down and refuse to eat.  If you tried to approach her she’d FREAK out and run away with her big scared eyes.  But now we can also add to the list: the smell of the oven cleaning and the smell of meat in the crockpot.  Weird, right?  I thought I was just crazy but my boyfriend definitely agrees with me that there is something about the smell of meat cooking that scares her to death. Luckily, we aren’t huge meat eaters so it doesn’t happen often.

Anyone else’s buns do weird things like this?

That is so funny! Mine gets excited when we cook meat, especially steaks on the grill.
Both the buns I have had never really got scared of anything. The weird thing my buns does now– he likes it when I sit down on my knees and he will back into me, butt first, between my legs to get pets. It looks like I’m sitting on him.

My first buns used to snore like a loud, old man. You could hear her when you weren’t even in the room. I used to have nightmares that someone broke in my house and fell asleep on the couch! Nope, it was my buns!

I thought it was just Skipper! She HATES the smell of cooking food. We keep Skipper’s cage in the front room/den which is connected to the kitchen. So when we’re cooking she will hide in her box and refuse to come out until after the smell is completely gone. I feel so bad because there’s no room in the house to move her elsewhere. Not to mention she would get lonely since the den is the most frequented area of the house and no one would see her if we moved her.

after i wrote this i did a forum search and saw there was a topic posted back in 2009 that talked about this – i thought my bun was the only one that hated cooking! i swear i am a half decent cook so it’s not like i’m burning things but she just FREAKS out. i feel so bad but i have to eat too! lighting candles seems to help – and when we have the windows open…but it’s too hot for both her and her humans right now for that. ha.

Hmm…I haven’t tried lighting candles. I might try that. Anything to keep the bun from being unhappy. =]

haha that’s hillarious! My first bun Beatrix LOVED it when we cooked! She’d sniff the air like mad! And if we sat on the couch with a plate of food, she’d jump on the couch and stick her nose in our plate of food! LOL Sometiems we’d give her a piece of what we had just to see what she’d do. She NEVER ate it! But she sure was all up in your business! haha My new bun doesn’t have any weird little quirks yet, but I’ve only had him for 2 1/2 weeks so I’m sure some will imerge later on!

we have a mix, Mr. Hopper, Nibbles and Baby hide when I am cooking, the others just act normal. LOL as a matter of fact if Blue is out and about and you have food he demands a sniff of your plate to see if its something he likes. OH one other thing, we eat in our living room because our kitchen is the sixe of a bathroom YUCK and as soon as we start eating Baby is at her dish and nom noming with us, so she doesn’t feel like she is left out LOL

Hannah hates everything about kitchens – the smell and the clanging pots and pans especially. People always ask me why I’m not worried she’ll run off into the kitchen (while I do keep her out of the living room if I’m not home) and I explain there’s no way she’ll go in there. The kitchen is like the epicenter of all scary things!

Mine aren’t afraid of much. Wooly has this funny thing he does when you offer him something new. Like my husband went to give him a piece of “real” banana for the first time. He put it in front of his nose and Wooly wrinkled his nose and had this look of disgust on his face. It was so funny. Once we finally convinced him to try it though, he found that he liked it.

I’m glad my bun isn’t the only one with a weird kitchen phobia. It’s honestly not something that I mind since it’s one less area I have to bunny-proof. I would not want to deal with a bun being the fridge or dishwasher!

None of our buns mind cooking, but generally they also don’t enter the kitchen.  In fact, when they’re placed on the kitchen floor, they’ll flounder around until they see the entrance to the living room, where they live.

The main exception is Aeryn, who likes to hop into the kitchen to steal the dog’s food and then gets yelled at before she hops back in.  To wit:

One of my bunnies (Paige) hates the kitchen because of the slippery floors. Her bond mate (Toshi) on the other hand sleeps in the cupboard and likes shoving his face in the grocery bags.

Foo hasnt met the kitchen yet. The weirdest thing I think she does is watching TV. Like she will sit with us and watch it while the shows on, and look totally engrossed. That or she steals things-or tries- and takes them to the corner we have dubbed her clubhouse. She has taken clothes, stuffed animals and has tried a can of soda and the remotes. Crazy theif makes it look like she is setting up for a party.

Rumi will RUN away as soon as I approach the kitchen — even if it’s to wash dishes. If I’m cooking anything, from the minute he hears the stove turning on, he runs straight for his hiding spot in the living room closet. If I sit in my chair to eat he’ll insist to sniff what’s on the plate — and goddess help you if it’s meat, he will run away at lightning speed kicking his feet back and eyes as wide as ever. I wonder if he has some sort of trauma with cooking/the smell of meat. I always thought it was either that or because rabbits are vegetarians.
