I wanted to know if rabbits “molt”. It seems my little one is shedding more than usual. When I pet her clumps of her fur come off! This has never happened before. I just got her spayed about 3 days ago. Is this normal? Is she stressed (cuz it’s making me stressed!)?

rabbits definitely molt.. some rabbits need a good brush and it comes out all at once and for some it comes out gradually.

im not too sure if stress causes them to molt. but i wouldnt worry too too much. just make sure she’s relaxed and give her loves. =]

My rabbit doesn’t shed… but he molts a few times a year. It comes out in clumps and he will eat it! I’m always fighting GI Stasis, even though I brush him constantly. He does stress during molting, so I give him more love. Also, the furiminator is an amazing tool! It is expensive, but worth every penny. Here is the website: http://www.furminator.com/deshedding-tools/small-animals/small-animal-deshedding-tool

It is sold at various places. Make sure your buns gets more greens and water during molting season, to help keep the GI system moving. Also, add more hay.

Mine is molting right now too, so it may just be the season.

                Oh dear.. molting, shedding.

A few weeks ago, Chacha bun began to have little fur sticking out and when I grabbed the fur, it came off o_o That was the signal to TAKE HER INTO THE BATHROOM and pluck her fur!

As I plucked off the fur I noticed that there was already fur growing back underneath o_O! Creepy bunny hehehe.

She has since stopped shedding and Mommy is happy about that lol.

I actually asked my vet about plucking the fur (mine acts like I’m killing him when I do it!) and she highly encourages it, along with the brushing. She said it doesn’t hurt the buns at all. If it is ready to come out, it will. She said mine is just being dramatic Oh, no. Not my buns! haha

Thank you to everyone for your replies! I will definitely brush her more however at this point she’s sulking and is mad at me to the point that I can’t even pet her. She’s very mad about the spaying… :p

Bunnies all have their unique way of shedding. Sometimes mine go through a light shed and sometimes they “blow their coat” which is when it comes off in handfuls and leaves bald patches all over. Most bunnies get cranky about being brushed. Mine like to sulk too. I always give them a piece of dried papaya afterwards to apologize.

A great trick is, after your finished with the brush, wet your hands, shake off the excess water and smooth your hands all over her. This picks up lots of loose fur that would otherwise end up on her tongue.

Oh yes, plucking makes the time spent on grooming a lot less! I had to do it to Chacha again yesterday as she obviously still wants to shed
