I had some questions concerning the procedure before getting a bun spayed.  I love the vet that I have now.  She’s great and knows her stuff.  Something she said though made me curious.  I was honestly trying to fit in all my questions so I forgot to ask her this one.  Not to mention vet trips frazzle me.  Skipper is normally a calm bun but she got really feisty when she was being handled by the vet.  We talked about doing a blood test on her before the spay.  But since we don’t know when that’s going to take a place she said there was no need to stress Skipper out more.  The vet did say though that before they were going to take the blood test she wanted to give Skipper something to calm her down so that way they don’t hurt her during the blood drawing.  Is this normal?  To give a rabbit something to calm them down?

Is she doing the blood draw the day of the spay?

My vet does not give my rabbits anything to take blood. She usually draws it from a vein in on of their back legs too. But I suppose if I had a high strung or squirmy rabbit she might give them something.

I’m not sure. I was going to ask when it got closer to the time of getting Skipper spayed. I don’t think she was going to do it the same day. The vet said she was going to draw blood from a vein in the back of the leg too. It was just that Skipper was so squirmy she wanted to give her something when the time came.

Hmmm no mine don’t get sedated for blood work. THe blood work is to see if the blood metabolizes the anesthetic before giving it to them in the surgery, so I don’t think sedating them would be good for the results, but maybe a new thing? I’d leave a message to ask to know more maybe?

Both my buns have been picky on the vet, and squirmy with ones they didn’t like. However, they have never been sedated for any blood work or anything else. Maybe she isn’t great at holding rabbits still?

It’s not the vet that she doesn’t like. She just doesn’t like being handled by people she doesn’t know. She’s very much a picky and particle bun. Not to mention she had a long car ride to the vet and she was getting upset that she couldn’t run around the vet room like she wanted. I don’t think they were going to give Skipper a heavy sedative. Just something small to calm her down so that they could put the needle in her back foot.

hmmmm…I’ve never heard of that being done. I would ask what they were planning to give her, for sure. And ask if it’s standard practice at that vet.

The vet said it was standard for her to do with feisty little buns. I’ll definitely ask what she is going to give her. She did say she would use isoflourine as the anesthetic for her spay.
